Yeah, Jimbo, I think tropical cyclone is right. As far as the mate thing, maybe the girl you taught was just being a silly girl. Mate can be a sexual partner, but it's not used in everyday speech. The word mate, just isn't used ---words like pal, dude, cat, buddy, jack, -- in the south you'll see guys say words like --babe, baby doll, doll, dog, bro, , even seemingly offensive words like bitch, can be used amongst friends but you have to be carefull ---cat daddy, cap, man, daddio, etc. --but no mate. I don't know why it isn't used --Australia and the U.S. were both English colonies ---I like it though ---it has a certain punch and significance none of the other words have.
By the way, while I have you on the line, what do Americans sound like to you? Americans generally think Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans -- did I miss any --maybe some Canadians sound British or English. But Americans must sound British or English as well. Anyhow, just a question. G'day mate.Last edited by jaegerhund; 01-27-2007 at 04:48 AM.
