    Glenn,

You might as well resign yourself to the idea of a gate. I am in a similar situation: my driveway is a bit over 1900 feet long. Even though there are only two more driveways before the access road dead ends, meaning not much traffic, people would drive on in, sometimes coming right up to turnaround in front of my house. When I asked them what the %@$* they thought they were doing, the most common answer was "I didn't see the signs" followed by "We were just looking around." I would give them the "There's always at least one person on the property, armed, so it would be a very bad idea to come back after dark" speech but it didn't seem to register on most of them. Soo.. I have to put up with the inconvenience of a gate because The Other Guy is an inconsiderate moron.

We have to accept the fact that people just don't read signs and most think that rules don't apply to them anyway. I don't think that most people are deliberately inconsiderate, they are simply unaware that there are other people in the world. It's a sad sign of the times.

    rs,

Spike strips in the road, it'd be an invisible, effective gate that you can open on close when you leave or when others are arriving...you could then get kickback from local towing companies as well. It'd lighten the mood a little and teach people a lesson.

Funny you say that, there are two "Access Points" to some property on the South side of the road which actually is "For Sale" I think many of the idiots are from that but even before it was for sale we had issues...

These access points are Skidder trails from logging, but many times people think they are driveways, I have pulled 3 out of there with the Kubota just this Spring...
I finally called the listing Realtor and explained no more freebies, if I have to start the tractor it costs $100 now

Do you want people to stay for a while or not enter in the first place?

In modern times I find that many do not read signs, and fewer observe them (think about the money we spend to unsuccessfully help people observe speed limit signs that are VERY well marked).

Sorry, if you want people to stay out, you need to make it more inconvenient than a sign that can be driven past.

For what it is worth, threatening signs are probably less effective. The legal defenses available to someone who was shot at while driving an open road make these signs a total joke.

Most areas have laws regarding entrapment. Really your best bet is to either fence/gate up or live with the idea that people will drive up your road occasionally.

Some interesting reply's through this thread some humorous

So what I have found out since posting this and talking with my attorney which made things much more clear..

    1. It is my road so legally I can do whatever I want, except hamper access by the people that have deeded access (no locks without them having a key)
    2. We have to post a sign at the front of the road that states "Private Road" best right above the Street name sign
    3. This enforces all the "Private Property" signs down the entire road
    4. The gate is a bad idea because it means that the "Fire Dept" does not have to enter, besides all the snow problems. so unless you are keeping something in, gates are bad..
    5. The archway is a good idea but it has to meet minimum requirements for the "Fire Dept." so does the road actually.
    6. Once the archway is in it does delineate a perceived boundary which makes Trespass much more enforceable.
    7. Regardless of fencing, or gates, or boundaries, Trespass is pretty much un-enforceable anyway unless they are hunting that is a big deal up here..
    8. The neighbors are all for the "Private Road" sign up front, as long as I buy it hehehe

Interesting conversation all in all though, she said never use threatening signs, just in case you ever have to actually use force that looks bad in court, even signs like "Beware of Dog" can be used against you in civil court...

Definitelt different in Bama...Beware of dog sings and you get bit, "why were you in the yard?, and did the sign not clue you in?"
However, here you can only shoot a trespasser if you feel an iminate threat for you or your family...the way the cops told me after mine and other neighbors vehicles got broke into thanksgiving, "just make sure the entrance wound is in the front" The city cops all have an understanding with our people here in town, if you break in or trespass you're going to get shot no questions.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

    Her words...

Beware of dog signs in Civil Court says,

You know the dog was dangerous, and the 5 year old child that opened the gate can't read,, YOU LOSE!!!!

The "Trespasser's will be shot on Sight" etc: signs in civil court mean, "See your Honor the home owner has a propensity toward violence, I am sure a more reasonable person would have used a different solution" YOU LOSE !!!

Note the Civil Court part, none of this probably would mean anything in Criminal Court in most places

Like I said a pretty interesting talk, and my attorney is a gun gal, I just cleaned up a tested 3 for her in the past month...
