Thread: Tamahagane work in progress

The information found out about the Tamahagane steel that made this razor was fascinating.
The sword was made in the 1600's by sword master Hata Mitsuyo, he was a famous swordsmith, famous for his short sword, nicknamed, "the Devil's kitchen knife", and if you follow the link below, you can see the last three symbols of the Kanji match the symbols in pic #3 from Bruno's first post and read about the maker - truly an ancient piece of steel.
Love it, the "Devil's Kitchen Knife":

Thanked: 2284I'm really digging this latest one Phrank and Bruno! I'm a sucker for traditional shaped blades. Just my opinion here, because I'm a wood guy.... If it were my blade I would want it scaled in the most amazing burl I could find and it would look something like this.
Or this...

Thanked: 2284They'd need to be stabilized or vac treated with something, be it oil or a sanding sealer.
Again, this is just me and how my brain works, A blade made out of steel so, so, so freaking rare, why would you put them in scales anyone can buy off the shelf. I would need to have the scales made from something just as rare. Mammoth, Whale, elephant ivory comes to mind. Burl like this I posted ( which was just sold on ebay from a vendor in London ON BTW.) Mother of pearl...... Something elegant!
Don't get me wrong, That kirinite will look awesome too, and will last forever and never be touched by the elements. But it wouldn't be enough for me.
YMMV. < had to.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

LOL - I don't think so, my wife would kill me.
Couple of weeks ago she found out that my Badger hair brushes were in fact, "Badger" hair - when she found out how said hair was cultivated, there was much flipping out, she started calling me a, "Badger killer", "pathetic", and "murderer"...I pointed out her makeup brushes were black badger hair, and she was caught by that, but there was much rage directed at poor old Phranky by the wife and daughter! Much rage....
