Thanked: 735Frenchpoint Friodur
Got me a Spanish point worked back Friodur and moved the tip across the border into France...
Tang got a modified heel, and a thumbnotch.....I gotta have a thumbnotch!
Still the same scales it came in. They're pretty nice. I'll wait for inspiration to strike for a new set of scales for this Big Momma (I already have a hazy idea, but I'm waiting for it to fully form in my mind...)Last edited by Seraphim; 03-23-2009 at 09:20 PM.

Your balls are getting bigger with that grinder to do that with one of those! Looks good, but i must admit to prefering the old point.
When does a round become a french? I thought that as soon as the curve started to return on itself at the edge it was a round.
Still loving the thumbnotches!

Thanked: 735My classification is if the edge is longer than the spine you can call it a French, or oblique point.
If the curve doen't return, then it becomes a spike in my book, and I'm not going there.... I like things that add to shave ease and comfort, not upping the danger level beyond where it already is!
And there were some beads of sweat on my forehead while I was working on this, that normally are not present when I'm grinding a DA!
I used to have one of these Spanish point Friodurs, and a Roundpoint one at the same time. I prefered the roundpoint, as the cutting edge was about a 1/4 inch shorter, and seemed to allow for better manuvering around my face. Thus I decided to shorten this one a touch too. And the French point allowed me to mesh the new point lines into one of the previous worked back features.Last edited by Seraphim; 03-23-2009 at 06:10 PM.

Work
At first Thank you for shareing .I appreciate what you have done and would call it great work if you put up picture. like you are shaving with this blade .I want to see your thumb position and how you feel blade in shaving position.
Again Please do understand why i am asking for this.
I think many People start to make a nice figure etc on the blades (this is great )but they forget about balance of the blade. When you shave this is important factor. In other way someone can have wonderful looking blade but it has been unbalanced so badly it is useless>.
In this blade i think(assume you thumb won't be able to rest correctly on the shank)i could be wrong.Only you can let us know.
You are doing great work and i love it i saw pictures with double arrows .
i hope i am not hurting your feelings and this is not personal.

You bring up a very good point. Thank you for doing so, that is the whole purpose of these forums.
The first razor I put a thumbnotch on myself was my Tally Ho. I just put a curve on there that I thought looked pretty good, sort of how the 1/4 grinf LeGrelots are thumbnotched.
After then picking the razor up, as if to use it, I then realized that I needed to re-modify the thumbnotch shape to make it fit my thumb, and also that if the thumbnotch were positioned further back on the tang, it would have given the razor a bit better balance (that razor is still one of my best shavers! Really smooth and sharp!).
So, after that experience, what I now do, is to first pick up the razor before modifying it, and hold it like I'm going to shave with it. I find the balance point, and mark where my thumb is located. That is where I then sketch out the thumbnotch position.
So, I really do customize them for best balance, at least for the way I like to hold them.
Here's a pic. My hand is a bit contorted trying to hold the razor, and show it to the camera. The Friodur tang feels exceptional with a thumbnotch, as it is a very wide tang. Because of that, I did not feel the need to add JumboJimps, or anything to the topside, as the wide tang and thumbnotch by themselves give an excellent feel for where the blade is.Last edited by Seraphim; 03-24-2009 at 05:11 PM.
