The knots where part of another learning experience. They are actually two different knots from different places in the board. I started with a piece of wood about 3/16" x 1.5" x 3'. I got two knots that matched pretty well and cut them out. The issue came when trying to align the blade when it closed. since the pieces are from different areas the grain is different and the stiffness of the scales are different. I ended up thinning one scale slightly to weaken it to match the other. Not much but it worked. The blade closes straight down the middle!
