    Default Bang a Gong!!

Here is Roy's Gong razor. It's been making it's way around the US, as Roy has been sharing it with us razor nerds to play with during the last month. This week it has been my turn. While Pinklather had put a fabulous edge on it, my task was to use it for a while then re-hone it and send it on to the next guy to try. Well, I offered to put a polish on it for Roy as long as I had it, so yesterday it got the full restoration treatment and a new set of pins. There is still some pitting on it that will remain, giving the razor some character.

She hones like a dream, and shaves excellent. I lightly sanded the tang and some of the worst spots on the blade, then buffed it on my wheels using black-red greaseless until she has a great shine to her. She was handsome to start with, but now I think she is just gorgeous!! I hope Roy is pleased as well, she is leaving for home today.

I hope he doesn't mind that I posted up some pics of her, but it truly is one of the best jobs I've ever done. New pins on both ends, hand peened (for those of you guys who hate the microfasteners).

Please forgive the crap photos, but between my terrible skill and a limited camera, I just pretty much suck at taking decent pics. Also, it is windy as all get out today, and I couldn't see the dust that had collected on the scales, but the camera shows every spot and flaw, whether I could see them or not!! (Eyes are not what they used to be ya know!!)

So thanks for giving me a place to show her off.

    Enjoy my friends!!

Are those new or the original scales?

They are the original scales, just polished with PlastX and waxed with Turtle wax. They were in remarkable condition to start with, and were so easy to clean up as they hardly really needed it, just all part of the overall treatment all my razors get.!! Thanks for asking..

It's a beautiful thing to see original scales on vintage razors.
Now I have to look up "PlastX " and see what that is. I'm afraid it will end up on the "Must Buy" list , though.

Aha, I always think just because I know what it is, everyone knows too.. PlastX is that Headlight polishing compound for restoring the plastic headlight covers to clear again (removes fogging and scratches). Easy to use and effective as all get out!

    Thanks Mike!

I’m really looking forward to not only seeing your wonderful work, but to check out the edge!!

Yes it’s been making the rounds! I just had to share! I’m so glad that I bought it!

As I said, I’m looking forward to your edge of that Naniwa 12k! I’m also looking forward to Robert’s edge off of his Gucci Rocks. While I do prefer my edges a little on what Robert refers to as (crispy) Robert’s into more of the (smooth). It will be interesting! It will be a really nice experiment!!

    Thanks again my friend!!

Glen (GSSIXGUN) turned me onto the headlight polish! I use a 3M product called (LENS & HARD PLASTIC CLEANER). I bought it at a NAPA Auto Parts store. The UPC # is 5113139017.

I’d used it on the scales before Mike got it. I had a co-worker give me his grandfather’s straight to clean up, not to use but to see the difference. The scales had a minor cigarette burn scar. I use 1000 grit wet and dry under running water to smooth the scar, then I used an old t-shirt and the 3M polish and the scales came out wonderful! I used turtle wax to finish. With that said, 3M does make a product to ‘seal’ and finish, I haven’t tried it but I’m planning on trying
