The female that runs the shop at the end of the row is even worse...she wanted $30 for a rusty Bengall that had a crack that ran from edge to spine and a hole completely thru the blade about 1/8" from the edge...when I explained that it wasn't even worth trying to restore, she said "why would you want to, its an antique and worth more as it is..its got the box (incorrect one) and everything!"

You can't argue with that type of logic

I haven't been for a while, but the place I check out usually, the two ladies there have just that sort of logic...

Mostly, just some very poor English. I have been quite tired of late, and a phone keypad isn't the easiest thing to type on.

Then there are those that pop up on Flea-bay, with descriptions such as "rare bengal" with a starting price of 110 and no bids. From what i've learned over this site and many others is that there are massive amounts of these around which should keep the price down for those collecting (and using) local imported ones (although imported a long time ago).

Australia does seem to be the "Bengal Repository". When I first joined this forum everyone said 'you live downunder,
so there should be plenty of Bengals for you to buy' !!....
Took me a while to work that out. We also have more than our share of Blue Wonder straights.

What is the experience of our other, more experienced Aussie collectors ?

These were "all bought" from Aussie vendors. I've seen a lot more here, but they were far too rich for my blood.
We have a healthy community, so the bidding can be fierce !!

Well I don't really collect razors, but when I have been on the hunt, I found, out of about a dozen or so razors that, only one Gotta 120 and a Bengall was of any sort of restorable quality. The rest was over priced rubbish. I bought the Gotta. If I could find a Bengall Wedge or an 8/8 hollow (or wedge) I wouldn't pass it up if I had the ready cash.

I think maybe some of the eBayers (that claim to have experience in antiques) are just guessing. They figure that anything this old must be rare. The most i've paid so far has been under 25 per razor, and the blades have been reasonably bright (water stains etc). The expensive one I mentioned before looked like it was found in a fish pond. So far my sharpest eBay find has been a Mercator, just stropped it and shaved, magnificent.

I just missed out on a triple pack the other day, including what appeared to be a wedge, albeit with a chipped toe. Thought it would be a great project.

I have bought a few razors on ebay locally, and not paid much for them, was several years ago, have not been to any antique stores for awhile, so will look with interest. Was in Tassy a couple of years ago, bugger all razors and all rubbish for stupid prices.

    Cheers and Merry Christmas
