I stopped making my regular trips into the antique store I sourced a few nice razors at when I realised I was the reason they were hiking up the prices with the excuse made that "they have become quite popular recently you know!" I haven't been there for a year or more now...So cop that you pair of old biddies that run the place. I hope you hair turns blue!

Isn't that just supply and demand, we are a capitalist country after all.

Sounds like somebody needs to flood the market over there. How many straights will fit in a suit case ? Hones will be heavy but if we spread them out we can get a few over there. hmmm how much does it cost to get a container down there ? I know it's only about 3,ooo US to the middle east. I have noticed the Ducks are fetching a high price in your market.

I do have to say that shipping from the US to AUS isn't all that bad...that's the best alternative I know of. THink of the petrol you will save.

The guildford store to the left (Jones or something), the two little ladies in there need some serious HRT, they are so damn rude!
I drove through Guildford yesterday, and the 3 together are Jones of Guildford (that one is a bit like au.tie wainrights from last of the summer wine), basic elements studio, and the old markets (or something similar), then there is the one the other side of the king and I (yummy food), and also round the back of the old markets. The one near the rose and crown isn't there anymore from what I could see.

Our dollar is relatively high at the moment, makes it worthwhile buying off e-bay. Not much to be had in antique shops here anymore, the cut throat is making a come back almost everywhere it seems.

Hopefully people are just getting them to try out, then they will end up back on the market. There is a good chance that a lot of them will end up wrecked though.
I am going to the UK in about 6 weeks so I will try and see what is about, though I probably won't have much time. One place I am going too is full of little antique shops so I might have some luck. It sort of reminds me of looking for cool vintage clothes in charity shops, they just don't have them anymore, but the stuff is still comparitively the same age, ie in 1995 the stuff was late 70's and early 80's, now it's probably mid to late 90's that they are getting. As time goes on things get harder to find, and the more folk with big collections the more gets paid for the items.

The upside to it all is that companies like Dovo etc. will be forced to up production, which will mean that the lesser qualified craftsmen will get more practiced and skilled, which will help with replacing the older generation of artisans who are either retiring or dying off. Even if prices have to go up because of demand, I see these old skills of razor crafting to be just as important to keep as the skill of using them. And I certainly want the option of new razors as well as the ability to hunt down the elusive perfect (to me) vintage.

Its not just shaving gear that is hard to find these days, its all collectibles. Its almost like overnight the world realized that old gear is good. I collect old gaming gear as well and the same thing has happened. over night the prices basically went through the roof.

Australia seems to be the worst effected though and i don't know why.

In Australia there is basically a lack of supply. The country was only settled a few hundred years ago by Europeans so you haven't got the number of people with old stuff, and I would imagine a lot of early stuff was locally produced to fill a need, not a desire for aesthetics.
