2- buy a ford or Holden, when they do break down parts are easy to come by.
We ended up buying a fairly new Japanese car, which did well.

I take it you know that ford actually stands for #$%&ed or repair daily. Holden should really be called hold-on, as in hold on to all the bits that broke so we can fix the car when we get home.

I have a 9 year old holden wagon, that I have known for about 3 years and owned for about 1.5. In the time I have known it ALL that has gone wrong is: various bits of trim breaking/ falling off, the notoriously brittle fuel cap breaking off, the gearbox disintegrating, the A/C degassing itself, the front rotors warping, the factory gas defining itself, the key falling apart. And probably more that I can't remember.
    Hard on the gear!

That might explain why there are (apparrently) so few antique razors, hones 'n' stones available.
I can't remember the last time I heard of an open air (antique) fleamarket etc.

Another point to mention is that it seems everyone is collecting something "antiquey" these days,
Razors, guitars, pocket watches, bottles, katana, first edition books, etc and I know of more than a few people who are
doing this to supplement their superannuation....
There is collector fairs that they have at the show ground etc that apparently you can find razors at. You hit the nail on the head with antique collectors. They buy it for the vintage/collector aspect not to use so they pay top $ for junkers cos they are old and good razors sit on shelves or in boxes unused. It's bloody sacralidge
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

I am fairly sure that if some of the guys here were honest they have razors that never or almost never get used. I am not a collector so I dont fall into that category, but I think there are people with over 100 razors.
That means that with a full rotation they would get used about 30 times every 10 years give or take.

My gathering of 15-20 shave ready straights is both historically accurate and eminently justifiable.
    Werd!

I feel just the same Ed. I don't have a problem like those other guys

Just because I mentioned it a few times here is a picture of jonesy's dodgy solar install

The shop faces almost due west to the best of my knowledge, so the front verandah roof would have been perfect, except for:
There is a tie bar directly over one of the panels.
There are aerial cables running directly over the install.
There is a power pole directly in front of the install.
Shade is the enemy (even small amounts) and this system is battling a lot.
And I still have no idea how he got it past the historical society.

You could go proactive and place a Craigslist ad looking to buy razors and hones. I've done this with success in my area

Jones in Guildford aren't that bad..the nice wee lady rings me when she gets any straights in and then I go in and tell her how much they're not worth and normally leave with a couple of Bengall's or similar at a reasonable price....just realised ..does this mean I'm the cause of the shortage?

They did have 1/2 a dozen or so shaving mugs in the other week (with spouts) but they're not really my thing so I passed on them..

I guess you're right Ed, I was in just after her husband died and spent 1/2 an hour or so chatting & moved a couple of heavy bits for her...they're both nice enough ladies if you can get them to engage but not very knowledgeable on the shaving stuff value unfortunately..they seem to think that just because its old it should command top dollar!
The female that runs the shop at the end of the row is even worse...she wanted $30 for a rusty Bengall that had a crack that ran from edge to spine and a hole completely thru the blade about 1/8" from the edge...when I explained that it wasn't even worth trying to restore, she said "why would you want to, its an antique and worth more as it is..its got the box (incorrect one) and everything!"

You can't argue with that type of logic..
