Cardboard works great too. Who made your 1911? Wilson combat mags for it are the cats meow

The cheapest humanly possible - Norinco Govt model. $350 CDN deliverd. I was expecting to have to do quite a bit of buffing on the rails, feed ramp, etc., but it actually feels really smooth. Only two issues with it: one of the cheap plastic grips was cracked (they supply a second rubber set that I've replaced it with) and the thumb safety was all but immovable. But disassembling it and cleaning out Norinco's buckets o' grease has helped quite a bit.

Hoping to get to the range later today, but boy does it ever get dark early these days.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I think you may have a pleasant surprise at the range with how well that Norinco shoots. Let us know how you make out.

Everyone should try a 1911 at least once in their life. I bought an AMT Hardballer near when they first came out. I had a lot of fun with it once I learned I had to lube the locking lugs with lithium grease to keep it from locking up on me.

They shipped it to me in the mail and I got a call from Customs in town to pick up my package. Went down got the serial number then to the local firearms registrar for a permit to transport it home and register it then back to customs. Can't imagine it is that simple today.

Norinco used to make a copy of the M14 that looked rude and crude. A buddy of mine bought one years ago and was surprise that it feed his cast lead bullet reloads without doing any work to it. It was pretty accurate too.

Yea, we are pretty much dark by 5PM here. That is another thing that makes winter hard to take, the reduced hours of sunlight.

Old copiers are superb. Parts fly off as you shoot it!

I've really enjoyed target shooting with my .270. It started just sighting in and I kept on going. But generally, for maximum fun, stuff you hit has to explode, make noise, move...something.

I read recently that the USA is releasing a whole heap of 1911s for sale, old surplus stuff... I would love to own one but sadly they are very very hard to come by in Aus... I can't quite recall but I think all calibres over .40 are now also on the blacklist

Shooting cans can be fun. They can be quite explosive when full!

I snuck over to the range this afternoon and all went very well. There was a bit of a feed issue with one of the magazines, but with use it seems to have ironed itself out and is now working 100%. The only thing is that the thumb safety is still too stiff. I may take it apart again tonight and see if there is something that needs buffing out. It works, but there's no way I could flip it on with my thumb. Apart from that though, I have no complaints. I was expecting it to be really roughly finished, but while some of the inner surfaces that don't contact anything are far from a machinist's dream, the bits that (IMHO) matter seem to have been quite nicely done. Other than the thumb safety, everything operates very smoothly. It sure has a satisfying *thunk* when fired.

I've heard very good things about those M14 clones. I don't know anyone who has one, but a few friends have them on their wish list, so I may get to shoot one one of these days.

I have an old Norinco SKSD which really surprised me as to it's accuracy with just the iron sights. It's a 'ban sporterized' model with plastic monte-carlo type stock. Sucker feeds the cheap Russian ammo all day long and is cheaper to shoot than a .22 these days. Fun rifle!

President Obama did sign a bill into law a few weeks ago that would allow the sale of +100,000 surplus Colt 1911's (WWII-Desert Storm era) to be sold to the public. The program in which they'll be sold has a brick and mortar store about an hour from my home-town. I called them to get as much info as I could, but even they didn't have many answers. Just a bunch of, "we'll post the info to our website as it becomes available." I figure from a logistical standpoint it'll take them several months to catalog and categorize all those pistols before, but I keep checking in for updates.

If anyone outside of the US wants one, let me know and send me some money. I'll buy it and hang on to it for you. I'll even take you to the range when you come and visit!

Sorely tempted to take that offer, I'll even let you use it if you clean it
