Thread: Musicians?

I was wondering about musicians among us myself! For me, it's guitar since about 1973. I have a custom-ish Strat, a Taylor acoustic, and a Spanish nylon string as my musical weapons of choice these days.
As far as the music discussion, I was raised on the "progressive rock" of Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, and maybe Tom Waites. I could never buy into Journey, Kansas, and other bands of that ilk. Back then (early to mid-70s) the crap music was called bubblegum or disco (and a few other choice words).
What I see kids "rocking" out to these days really does make me raise an eyebrow. While some of the new stuff can be pretty good, most of it I'd classify as today's version of bubblegum. In the end though, I suspect it's all a personal thing - like all other art forms. We all gravitate to some niche intensely, appreciate a bit of other types of music, and consider the rest oddities at best.

Thanked: 983Had a bit of a jam session with a mate over the weekend. Me on Low Whistle and he on guitar at his brothers house warming party. Played some Irish, but mixed it up with a bit of classic rock/pop with tunes like House of the rising sun and Nights in White Satin etc. It was a good night and all the guests enjoyed the entertainment.

I started playing 5-string banjo at about 14 years old and picked up an acoustic guitar at about 15. I then went on to play in a "garage rock band" in my teens playing electric guitar. I had a Strat and sold it and bought a Gibson SG as we were into the Gibson sound of so many bands of the late 70's and early 80's. I still play as a hobby and have a Carvin DC127 electric and a Peavy Vypyr 75w modeling amp. I still have my Takamine F-400 12-string that I have had since about 1978 and I have an Ibanez Artist 5-string banjo that I have had for close to 30 years. I am tempted to sell the banjo since I never play it anymore.
My son is a Drill Instructor in the United States Marine Corps at Parris Island, SC

Thanked: 5Singer my whole life, sang with a traveling boys choir til I hit my teens. Sang with the adult choir since the age of 9. Been a pianist/keyboard player since the age of 8, and just because I started to teach myself to play the 6 stringed wonder we call a guitar last year. I have a decent starter Fender acoustic, a cheapie Rouge electric, a family members 1974 Gibson SG with P-90's on long term loan and a dandly lil Epiphone Les Paul Special Plus with Lawrence Pups and Coil Taps.

Thanked: 5As far as music goes with the exception of Hip Hop/ Rap If it has a beat and a melody I'm a fan. My personal tastes run to Country,Southern Rock, Classic Rock and yes I'm still an 80's metalhead and glam rock fan.

Trumpet player since 1996. Started in middle school and just never put it down. Turned into a real hobby in high school and I went to college on a trumpet scholarship. I ended up shifting gears away from music and changed majors in college, but I still play recreationally in a community orchestra in Wurzburg, and when I get back home, I'll be looking for some jazz groups to sit in with.
My main workhorses are Bach Stradavaria (Model 43 in Bb and a C) but I have a lead horn that is a beast. It's too much horn for me, but one day I'll buckle down and tame it. It's a Zeus Olympus in Bb. Definitely an unforgiving horn.
