Did you ever check with a veterinarian about whether having a dog pull that kind of weight (even willingly) can result in long term injury? Pulling 2100 lbs is not something a dog would ever do by nature. Just because he can do it doesn't mean he should be doing it. Besides, what's the enjoyment of asking a dog to exert that kind of stressful effort? An invitation to injury, if you ask me (the owner of 4 dogs).

Best way to deal with these types of guys is to IGNORE THEM...No one wants to list to the crap he spews on the last couple of threads but himself..LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY.

Nice dog!!!!!
Ever look into Schutzhund?
Theres a guy near here who does it with his APBT's as well as pulls them. They look really cool comming in for a bite looking like little canine versions of Arnold.
Frankly Billy, pits were bred to be fought with each other, weight pulling for them is kinda a low key injury free way to compete.

Thanked: 1587Are there weight pulling categories? Like weight divisions or breed types? And is it something that needs training from an early age?
(My girl dragged a 6 burner BBQ complete with 20kg gas bottle across my inlaws deck by its cover one day when we were out - do you think she shows promise? )

Thanked: 586Hey BillyJeff (I see you have Eraserhead as your avatar), Not only have I checked with a vet, Basil's doc is one of his sponsors. He gets checked out before every competition. Just so you know, that 2100lbs is only Basil's personal best. I've seen dogs in the same weight class pull over 3k.
Here, get some knowledge about this pretty old sport:
http://www.iwpa.net/
Here's Basie after he finished fouth at the championships last year. I don't think he was injured:
We had to fly into Denver and there's a pit bull ban there so Mr. Toes came up with this plot (the first panel is the actual Denver Law):
Basil will soon be certified with Therapy Dogs International. He has already been temperament tested and certified by the Temperament Testing Society. He also has his AKC Canine Good Citizen title as well as his Working Dog Superior (WDS). I want him to be a breed ambassador. These bully breeds are constantly badmouthed by knucklheads who know nothing about dogs.Last edited by icedog; 04-09-2008 at 03:01 AM.

Well I guess I stand corrected. Having never heard of this "sport" before, it struck me as rather bizarre. But I did check out your link (and others) and it certainly seems to be a legitimate activity. So--my humblest apologies for suggesting otherwise.

Thanked: 1icedog, after reading your posts in this great thread, I know three things about you: you have a Mac, you used Comic Life, and you really, really love your dog!
All your comments were really interesting and Basil is a super special dog, thanks for sharing him with us.
