My first motorcycle was a Honda Shadow 500,,loved it, had it 6 months,,a guy made a left turn in front of me 3 blocks from the house, drove the bike through the front passenger door & my front tire was resting on his right thigh. Thank God he was driving a Toyota, the bike stayed in the car & I went over the top about 15 yards,,,,enough for a 1st down & a compound fracture to my left arm.
I had a new 700 Shadow in 4 months.
Plain black wrapper 2007 - nothing special. I really like the way BMW made this bike as a naked street bike or bag/shield trimmed ST. The non-BMW adds are 35w halogen Motolights on the front calipers (they are magnificent - bright day/night and built to last) and the 25" Cee Bailey windscreen. 68,000 miles, 48mpg, curve-carver.

You're wired for bikes or you're not, I guess. I bailed from a GoldWing in 1995 before it high-sided; I bounced a little, skidded spread-eagled a lot and rolled a little as the finishing act. Bruised ass, sprung little finger, scarred helmet, shredded clothes, totalled bike - fortunately I was dressed for cold weather that day. Now I only dress for the fall. Had a 1996 GL1500 later that year. (I never claimed to have any brains.)Quote:

Try taking a 90CI shovel wide open till it goes lean and starts blowing fire out the carb and then try to figure out how fast you're going. I never did because I twisted the speedo gear off at the tranny on that run. Speedo quit at 130 on that bike and whatever it ended up at was WAY too damn fast for that piglet.

If the talk is of speed, I did 260km/h once going across the Nullabor plains. That was one long, hot, boring ride. I didn't even know I had gotten up so fast until I got sick of peering through mirage haze and glanced at the speedo. Worse part of it was, I was travelling with a mate, who was on something a little slower than my GSX at the time. I had to wait in the heat under a bit of scrubby bush for half an hour before he finally caught up.

Anyone who thinks a sportster cannot go fast, or a Harley is just loud, hasnt ridden one lately.
Factory Harleys are quiet. Modified Harleys can be FAST.

Since we're talking speed, I had a 98' Honda CBR 900RR I bought new, I had that up to 150 mph. Only did that once, and that was enough. I picked my spot between two corn fields that were cut and it had a nice straight away with a clear view. I wish I had that bike still...

I have loved motorcycles from literally the day I was borne. My parents didn`t have a car back then, and I sat between my mother and father on a Honda CB 500 when we travelled around. This was the very early 1970`s and today such a thing would have been insane! But for sure I got motorcycles into my blood early this way.
Today I take a ride on my Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade when I feel for that adrenaline kick on a twisty backroad. Here it is!

As an aside to the bike stuff (and related to it) They've just passed new "Anti Bikie" laws here in the last few days. With the usual 'If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear' spiel to appease the non club riders that the laws aren't aimed at them. However, three bikes together is good enough for the police to pull you over for search of self and property etc. Out on the highway alone today on the return trip home from the farm, two riders pulled out from a servo (gas station) ahead of me and I ended up being a tail end Charlie to the other two. Well I just twisted the throttle and took off, because there was no way in hell I wanted to be pulled over without due cause! :) Guess the new laws are turning even honest blokes like me (:w) into law breakers after all.

You should go google the NYC motorcycle rally event. It was a mess. I explect Bloomberg will come up with something similar. Yeah, it ain't right. Some of the nicest guys I know ride big Harleys and have the chain wallets, tats, etc. The cops should know that very few are out for trouble and concentrate on them and their bunch instead of wholesale discrimination againt anyone on a MC. Pretty much shows their ignorance. The Gov should hire a bikey to run the show! the bad eggs would be found quick. Dangerous dudes, a few. ;)
