I agree with Glenn. Look for a Smith with an 8 shot N frame and a six inch barrel. Consider what you intend to do with it. It won't be your carry gun so it will likely only see duty at the range. I carry a 2" bbl airlite 5 shot. That is all it is good for. My Smiths, Glocks, Sig & Beretta are strictly for the range. Here is the S&W website complete with rebates.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Don,
Here's a slightly different approach. How about an FN 57? FN Five-seven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I have been thinking about one of these. A couple friends of mine have them (pistols and rifles). Very interesting piece.

Thanked: 6I vote for the Smith with a barrel length between 4 and 6".
You've already got a semi-auto. Now it's time to treat yourself to something with a superb trigger and target sights.

I had a Glock 9MM as my sidearm in Baltimore - no problem, great to shoot, solid. Fired the 1911 for Army qualification and a Walther 9MM for Bundeswehr qualification. Liked the Glock the best. Easy to clean as well.
However, if you want something guaranteed to shoot (at least with good ammo), a revolver is the way to go.
+1 on the main issue being the feel, balance and caliber. Looks are nice, but if you are in a situation where you need to defend yourself, the look may only be helpful as a distraction ("Look, ain't it pretty?"...Bang.)
All guns should be treated as if they are loaded/chambered, so keeping one in the state should not be a problem. My biggest issue with people walking in a getting a gun off of the street is that many do not bother with training or safety. When you need to defend yourself is not the time to go "Now how does this safety switch off?"

Don, there's also the H&K USP in .40 cal. A wonderful gun. polygonal rifling like the Glock...accurate as all get out, and it looks bad ass, too. Plus, it has an actual hammer, so there isn't the weakness of the striker only getting one chance to make it go bang.
Just my .02, but I carried one for 4 years as a deputy....best carry gun I ever knew.

Thanked: 84I can only sit here and drool
We are a complete bunch of wimps in the UK. We let our government take our pistols off us.
Hang on to your Right to keep and bare arms Gentlemen.
Rant over,
For home defence......A nice 45ACP a nice old one or 44mag wheel gun
Or if I'm feeling really nasty a 44 cap'n'ball pistol.
For paper punching/turning target a nice Beretta.
Now I'm crying, I can barely remember shooting pistols...........
