I too was of this opinion until recently. A few of my friends took me out to their favorite hangout (the one by Home Depot on Broadway in Edmond). They have all you can eat, though it is a limited menu selection. You can only order a few pieces at a time, ensuring it is fresh as well.

Now, stuff like California Rolls at the Chinese buffet that have been sitting there for who knows how long... no thanks.

You're safe with the immitation crab in something like a Califiornia Roll, but I wouldn't touch their Uni <g>

It is quite common in Japan to have a sushi place have the sushi going around on a conveyer belt (Kaiten sushi), and you take off what you like. They constantly are preparing new stuff and putting it on there. It doesn'ty last too long!

    And I also prefer sashimi..

Sushi is definitely one of my favorite foods!

The local fish market had a good deal on sashimi grade Tuna today, so I took the opportunity to "hone" my sushi making skills. The rice is always the trickiest part but I've had success a few times. And since I can only justify buying small portions of fish, the nigiri cuts don't always come out as pretty as a pro's do.

(razor is just in the pic to keep this somewhat related to SRP, and because I just love japanese cutlery.)

Honestly. What's good sushi if it's not shared with good friends?!

    Very nice presentation, Russell.

Thought I would drag this thread back up, as I had the pleasure of some great sushi over the weekend

What are all of your favorites? Mine are:

    - Uni (Sea Urchin)
    - Ikura (Salmon Roe)
    - Maguro Otoro (Bluefin Tuna belly) GoodLife: School of Fish: Bluefin Otoro

Having recently moved, I had to discover the new sushi restaurants in the area, which is always a bit of a dice roll. Luckily, the local one is a nice, small, classy establishment, with some great quality food. They serve Kobe beef, and Bluefin (which can be hard to find). They also have some very creative lobster sushi, which I was very thrilled with.

I hear you big-time, Glen! Yep, we do pay a "sushi price" for our privacy, peace and quiet out in the country, don't we?

Last weekend I went on a mini-vacation to South Padre Island (AWESOME surfing in my playboat--for you non-kayakers, that's a short, stubby kayak made for doing tricks in whitewater.) They had THE BEST sushi place on that island--almost as good as the best place in Austin!

I literally ate it up...they had a Wasabi Roll with yellowtail, salmon and fatty tuna (inside out roll with wasabi in a fat line on top of it), they had fresh very white tuna, they even had a Yellowtail Cervice that was muy excellento (South Padre is about 23 miles north of Mexico.)

Love it! And that is one thing we lack out here in the Texas hill country...a good sushi place. I'm sure that's next. Bad thing is, it'll probably bring in even more new people crowding things up.
