Whiskey

I love Gentlemen Jack, Knob Creek, Woodford, Makers Mark, and recently, I have gotten some Basil Hayden's. It's very light, but very good and easy to drink as well. I unfortunately don't know my scotches that well, and have never had the pleasure of trying many fine scotches, but Johnnie Walker Red is always a safe bet.

As far as the whiskey/bourbon issue goes, Tennessee certainly does make Whiskey as well. the most notable of which is obviously Jack Daniels, which, due to the recipe, is not a bourbon.

but Bourbon is still my favorite :D

I am a Bourbon guy. I guess Scotch is just too smooth. Jack Daniel's single barrel is my favorite...but it has just gotten too expensive. It is what Jack used to be before the corporate suits watered the black label down.

If people like Tennessee whiskey I would suggest George Dickel 12 year. Its a great price for what it is. The distillery shut down for several years...so that 12 year is more likely to be 16-18! It won't give you a hangover, and they claim that jack is distilled so poorly now you can see its it break apart on the ice. (no ice for me lol)

+1 for you my friend. The bourbon whisky argument I believe is not as much towards the Scot's as it is between Kentucky / Tennesee.

My distinction between a good Scotch and a good Bourbon is that both are smooth while drinking neat, but only bourbon will allow you to add a multitude of mixers to accent the flavor of bourbon while Scotch allows few. Of course it should be a sin of all religions to add an outside liquid to any fine spirit, but............

Between half a measure and a measure of water really opens of the flavors of a good Scotch. But I would agree that adding anything beyond that is a sub-par decision.

Another Laphroaigist here. Very nice stuff, very nice. A bit of an outlay, but certainly worth it.

(And, may I add - a forum with civil discussions on straight razors, good liquor, and guns? What, am I dreaming!?)

I got a chance to try some Laphroig a few weeks back. A friend of mine brought a bottle out on a visit. It was quite tasty, with a very distinctive peat flavor.

And might I add, A gal with good taste in scotch, a revolver, a fountain pen, and a straight razor, I'm pretty certain you're spoken for?

I also like steak, but have not seen a thread for it yet. It comes to mind that steak and a nice Laphroaig is a good combination.

In all seriousness, I don't usually eat when I'm drinking whiskey (typically scotch whiskey). Sometimes I'll have a bit with a pipe, but I really prefer to just enjoy the scotch on its own.

I would be interested in hearing about food that goes well with a Highland, since that's typically what I drink.
