I like the early "opera" (beginning of XVIIc.), even if it is a bit wrong to call it opera: Euridice by Jacopo Peri (1600), Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi (1607). Come on: you should listen them!
You couldn't fill a shot glass with what I know about Opera. That was a perfect example. The supertitles were in English, and to tell you the truth, it's kind of hard for me to discern what language is being sung, even when it's English.

...And after that filled shot glass my next favorite opera is: dieEntfuhrung aus dem Serail. Gottob Frick was the best Osmin ever, hands down, no contest.

That's a very good one! And funny too! It's probably my favourite Mozart opera...

    Default Barber of Seville.

My favorite is La Boheme. I thought surely most of you would say your favorite was The Barber of Seville.

Treat yourself and listen to Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana - a one act opera that is just amazing!

Although not an opera, but a choral work (scenic cantata), my favorite is Carmina Burana.

The most famous of the songs in this work is "Fortuna, Imperatrix Mundi (O Fortuna)" used in many movies and tv commercials for it's high drama and epic tone.

"Fortune as the emporess of the world"?!? How blasphemous! Most of CB was bawdy stuff (for its day) set to music by Orff . My favorite is the "Roasted Cygnet".
