I only consider Wagner's works as worthy of listening. I cannot stand franch or italian opera. The Ring Cycle and Parsifal are my favorites. Wagner is the base of all modern music. His leitmotivs are present in so many songs nowadays.
Wagner and Atom Heart Mother from Pink Floyd are the only music that will give me shivers. Shaving to the sound of Parsifal is a very relaxing experience.

I like Michael Nymans chamber operas, especially " The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" .If you like popular music , Nyman is accessible. Superb opera , Beatles inspired, is Moran's " The Manson Family " , great stuff , though the CD of it was heavily banned apparently.

    Gentlemen,

I will take Tchaikovsky's "Pique Dame" and Verdi's "La Traviata" any time. Ah, but there's so much more. Only if I had time and space to list them all.

    Regards,

    Obie

Are you testing us? This statement is nonsense.

It's not over 'till the fat lady sings
Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
To spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the Last Day

    Default Opera

    Gentlemen,

"Opera is when a guy gets stabbed in the back and instead of bleeding, he sings" — Ed Gardner.

Mark Twain put it another way: "There isn't often anything in a Wager opera that one could call by such a violent thing as acting. As a rule, all you would see would be a couple of people, one of them standing still, and the other catching flies."

These and hundreds of other anecdotes, little stories and quotes from the world of great music and great composer appear in the book "Obie's Opus," by Obie Yadgar — yours truly. Enjoy.

    Default Opera

    Gentlemen,

Considering the almost interminable length of Wagner's operas, Sir Thomas Beecham was rehearsing Gotterdammerung when he said, "We've been rehearsing for two hours, and we're still playing the same old bloody tune" — from "Obie's Opus" by Obie Yadgar
