For me, it depends on the mood. For instance, I just finished up a rough week and was able to get a very stubborn nut off my motorcycle without resorting to the torch. This came on Pandora and is the essence of the kind of music I want to relax to right now:

YouTube - Fireflight - You Decide w/ Josh Brown (Day of Fire)

It's good rock, no screaming, and what some might consider heavy. I could nap to this

If I had to pick one and only one genre to relax to, it would likely be something classical. Give me a CD of Chopin's Nocturnes, and I'd be set for a while. Here is a great example of it:

YouTube - Yundi Li plays Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2

John Fahey for me when I am tattooing. Varies when I am not. Right now I'm listening to assorted '50s Doo Wop groups but it might be blues, jazz or classical depending on my mood.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

For relaxing - Bach violin concertos, Don Byas and Coleman Hawkins come to mind.

    Default Music most relaxing

    Gentlemen,

Such great answers. You all have excellent taste.

On the jazz side, yes, Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas and Oscar Peterson are sheer joy. I'll throw in George Shearing and Red Garland, too. But that's only the beginning.

On the classical side, where shall I start? Anything Brahms and Schumann wrote. Bach's cello suites, and his sonatas and partitas for solo violin or cello are wonders. The late Schubert string quartets are heavenly. Beethoven's "Spring" Sonata is a relaxing delight.

And, yes, I agree about the great Chopin and his nocturns. Chopin (1810-1849) was a magical pianist with an intimate style, which was perfect for the salon. All this is reflected in his music. The nocturns especially reflect the Chopin mood. Although the Irish composer John Field (1782-1837) invented the musical form "nocturn," Chopin perfected the form.

There is so much wonderful music out there, classical and jazz — something for every mood.

    Regards,

    Obie
