I have owned a couple 1911 models and I love them. There are a few "tests" that can be performed to see if the gun is tight. Now whether or not these are tests that truly determine if a gun is wore out or not I can not tell you this but I feel they make sense. Not in this particular order but here are the ones I can recall off the top of my head,
1. lock the slide back and shake the gun, this gives you an idea of how tight the fit is between the slide & frame as well as any other matting surface.
I believe in this test because I had a kimber that made hardly any noise at all and I now have a cheaper 1911 and in this position it rattles a bit.
2. with the slide forward in battery put your finger on the barrel and see if it moves. basically you are checking the play between the barrel bushing and the barrel.

I know if you go to youtube there are a couple videos on what to look for I can not recall any of the others right now, I believe the video I watched showed about 5 things to look for in 1911 model guns. I hope this helps a bit and good luck finding what you are looking for. Love gun shopping!

I'd delete Taurus from consideration. IMHO. The Browning Hi Power is a favorite of mine, the 9mm caliber is cheaper than 45acp, so rather than a 1911 I'd look to that. Condition is paramount, so if it is a semi-auto look at the innards for visible wear. I prefer double action only semis and revolvers, so if you go revolver a hammerless DAO J-frame would be my choice. S&W airweight 38spl or the more expensive 357s. Kahr Arms or Glock semi autos are also my preference for CCW.

yeah I guess I should've caveat'd glocks, I've tried them out at the range in multiple frame sizes and the grips were just too large for my hands. Plus, as much as I like my P30 I think I'm gearing more towards steel frames for my next.

The G-43, released last year, year before, is a single stack 9mm that is a natural pointer. Most importantly the 'bore axis' on a Glock is relatively low, causing less muzzle flip, and probably less felt recoil.

As for steel, I used to say I'd never own a plastic gun, but that was when mine were relegated to a drawer or my glove compartment. When I began carrying all of the time I began to appreciate the lighter weight. I recall getting an IWB holster for my Browning Hi-Power and brought it to work for my 10 hour shift. After a couple of hours I drove home and switched it out for a G-27. YMMV

I have yet to pull the trigger on this new to me Sig Sauer Nightmare in .357 Sig

Nice gun, Scott! IMO the 357Sig round is/was a passing fancy,...but, a nice round, nonetheless!!!


As to Glocks (all except the 42 and 43), this, IMO, is the best aftermarket 'add-on' for Glocks. I know, I know....all you "He-man" out there say "My finger is my safety!" OK...cool. BUT, youtube 'shot myself with my Glock" or the like. It happens! AND, the nice thing about thumb safeties, NOTHING out there says you have to engage them.

Anyway, here ya go, here's one I installed on a recent customers EDC:

I don't know about passing fancy, Oklahoma Highway Patrol still uses it, according to several OHP buddies it shoots straighter through windshields. I like the idea of .357 magnum power in a semi-automatic. The concept of a bottle necked cartridge making it a better feeding makes since to me as well. I hope to shoot it here in the next few days...

Like I said, "...a nice round..." It just didn't gain the acceptance Sig had hoped for.

That would be a good addition for someone who interchanges from a 1911 to a Glock. I carry a Glock 26 daily but I do have a Colt Model 70 for home protection use.
