I really like my electric one; it's "smart", so when the water has been at percolating temp. for a certain time it goes to 'keep warm' so that the coffee stays hot but doesn't have the water going through the grounds again, and again, and again....

To refresh my memory I googled how to make it and found this site here. I am going for a stovetop. Thanks for all the input guys.

Funny you mention this Jimmy...
I'm also looking for a new coffee tool as my espresso machine crapped out after 3 years. I was at Bath & Beyond and saw a Faberware percolator that looked extremely tempting but I like to do my research first so empty handed I left the store 2 hours ago.

Yeah Max, It has been many years but I remember when this was the way we drank coffee and we liked it. I am looking forward to giving it a shot. The worst that can happen is that I am out a few bucks and even then if company comes over and I break out the percolator they will be impressed. Retro y'know.

Gentlemen,
I think I'll pass on the percolated coffee and opt for coffee made with this:

I looked at those a couple of years ago. The cheapest one was $100 + and it is esentially a made in China electric drip with a well known logo. Probably makes good coffee but I bought a porcelain Mellitta pour over drip for half the $. Now I'm looking for 'a bit of the other'.

Percolator coffee is OK but you should try one of the vintage vacuum pots. Silex or Cory made many of them and Nicro made a stainless version that we used in the missile sites in the AF. I think the glass pots make better tasting coffee but are quite fragile. If you decide to try one stay away from the Cory that uses no gasket. Thay are a pain to get to work. Local flea mkts and Ebay are you best bets for locating one.

Getting up early and setting that up was one of the little chores that us kids used to share when I was growing up, your can of Folgers with the copper colored scoop, you could get the filters anywhere, not sure about that nowadays.
Then the next thing you know they had the drip ones with the built in timer to help make us lazier, uh, I mean make life more convenient.
