Ice cream...
...But for me, not just any ice cream. In fact I have been searching for a particular flavor I had as a young boy. I was likely 10 or 12 when My mother took me to the local 31 flavors ice cream parlor and instead of getting my usual Rocky Road I got something called Lemon Chiffon...I was floored! It was a creamy lemon flavor like nothing I had ever had. Well, they discontinued the flavor and I have been searching ever since never finding this flavor again. Oh, I found imitators mind you, but they always lacked something or they were too sweet, or the lemon flavor tasted more like fake lemons. And so it went for the last 35 years...
Yesterday as I was finishing my morning tea I came to the computer to find that a page was open with a formula for lemon chiffon ice cream. I started drooling just a little. I asked Karen, my wife about it and she said she thought she might try it in the future sometime but thought the formula unnecessarily complicated and was going to try another formula. she never knew of my quest and I didn't reveal it to her at this time either, but never the less I was a little disappointed that I wasn't going to get to taste it this day.
After lunch my wife makes the "uncomplicated" ice cream "Probably vanilla or one of her more wild concoctions " I think to myself. "Mark" my wife says, "Will you try this?" I dutifully taste the concoction and once again, for the first time in 35 years I am floored by the flavor that I tasted as a young lad. Serendipity indeed.
What is your favorite flavor?
Is there anyone else on a quest like mine and did you find satisfaction in the end as I did?
Lets hear it guys!!

Either rum raisin or pecan praline depending on the day for me. Congratulations on rediscovering your joy.

Thanked: 0There are some things you come to know and remember from your senses, and not through anything logical or reasoned.
I remember the slow slip of something cool melting on my tongue as the warmth rose.
A tinge of sweet berry jam intermingling with the mellowed flavors of vanilla.
The rich taste of churned cream in my mouth, provoking me to savor the next spoonful.
...If only I knew it by name and not some vague memory.
Although, taste tests would be half of the fun.

I prefer sorbet to ice cream and blue or red raspberry is fairly common although I do remember the ice cream in the shape of characters with gumball eyes from my youth. They disappeared for a while but have since made a comeback I'm happy to say.
Stale frozen gumball eyes for all!!!!!!!!!!

Thanked: 326To be honest mate, I hate ice cream. I worked years ago at Rite-Aid Pharmacy scooping that goop. At the end of the day all that ever crossed my mind was "cone or cup?" People have asked me what my favourite flavour was and I would tell them "I just scoop them" it's a miserable mundane job.
Since I was child having tried Dryers, Breyers, Baskin 31 and Rite-Aid, I dare say Rite-Aid's Cookies N Cream would be my choice

Great story! I'm glad you found that elusive flavour..!
I actually really like plain ole vanilla, as long as its done right and not with a load of chemicals.
I also like to add things to the ice cream. My favourite at the moment is vanilla ice cream with salted caramel sauce. Man, thats good!
I also quite like rum and raisin, and pistachio.

Thanked: 369The one flavor that stands out in my memory was a chestnut gelato I had in Florence many years ago. Very rich, dense and creamy.
My favorite BR (yay!) flavor was "Double Fudge Brownie."

I was going to say Pistachio gelatto, but for some reason I always come back to Mint Chocolate chip.
If you are ever on the Oregon coast hit up the tilamook cheese factory... Their ice cream is one of my favorites anywhere.

I don't really have a favorite flavor, but I do have a fond memory surrounding ice cream...
When I was a kid I used to go to this camp in upstate NY called Deerfoot Lodge. After the hike on week 2 we'd make ice cream with those old school hand churn ice cream makers. The younger kids would stand on the top of the bucket to prevent it from wobbling and you'd burn your arms out turning the crank. We only ever made vanilla, but it was some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The things you spend time on usually are.
This is what the thing looked like. You'd fill the outside with ice and rock salt, and there's a tumbler in the middle you fill with heavy cream.
