In my des-res, I have two pet rats, Max and Oz. Max was first to move in, and is essentially a rescued rat. His situation was either he moves in here, or he gets fed to a python. He was no older than six months back then, and the thought of him not seeing the next day... well, the decision was a no-brainer for me. Oz was purchased to be a friend for Max, as they're very social creatures; I can't play like a rat can... I value my hands quite a bit.
There's no fear of them getting dirty, they spend a lot of their lives cleaning and preening themselves... and sometimes each other. And as I live above a shop, there's no concerns of any noise from them.
And there's always a look of intelligence to them, they're always trying to figure something out.

Thanked: 334Deegee --
Ahh, seeing them reminds me of using them in my experiments in grad school...
Yes, they were treated humanely.

Thanked: 334Rats are very intelligent; that's one of the reasons psychologists use them in experiments. And they're cheaper to feed than undergrad volunteers.

Thanked: 884Thanks to the wiff and child, I am blessed with a brain damaged Basset hound, an emotionally challenged Corgi, 3 cats, 2 cockatiels, 2 ferrets, and an unknown number of fish........
Here's FREEWAY the squallbag. Noisiest damn cat I've ever been around. Found her as wee tiny kitten in a storm drain at work one day.
Then there's Smokey. He's my squeaky boy. Rarely says anything. Sleeps on my feet.
Hangs out a lot.
Then we have MICKEY! He doesn't know he's a cat. Wife raised him on a bottle.
He has 7 fully functioning toes on each front foot. Trying to give him a pill is
DANGEROUS!
The Corgi, Bo Bo.
Basset, Hunny Dew, in typical pose.

Thanked: 3Re: Pets
Our two:
On the left is our Jack Russell his name is JR. Name was given to him by his first owner. We've had him since his owners didn't want him from 9 months. He is now 5. True to a JRT he is a ratter & quite feisty. He is 11kg (24lbs)
On the right is Maya. She is a 12 month old Blue Cattle cross Bull Arab. She had 3 owners in 3 months before we adopted her. We also adopted her from about 9 months old. She is 35kg (77lbs).
Both are fantastic dogs."Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it."

Thanked: 884Never had a Jack Russel. Had red heelers for 25 years.
If there is a smarter, more fiercely loyal, and aggravating breed on the planet, I'm unaware of it.
I gave up on dogs when my last heeler died. Wife talked me into getting that damned Corgi. I can see a lot of the way heelers act from that knot head but it ain't the same. I still miss my red dog.Member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club, participant SE Asia War Games 1972-1973. The oath I swore has no statute of limitation.
