Default An expert on breaking in a new pipe.

Occasionally I get to Richmond on business. I used to live there. I miss having immediate access to the Old Virginia Tobacco Company on West Cary Street. Richmond is a tobacco place. Duh!
This shop is a gentleman smoker’s oasis. I wish that each of you could experience such a place. Every member of the staff is an expert tobacconist. Almost all smoke both pipes and cigars. “Jim” is one such gentleman. Besides being a pipe expert, he is a knowledgeable tobacco blender who loves to share his expertise and discuss blending ideas.

I asked Jim what I could do about rawness in my mouth while breaking in a new pipe. He asked me what I drank while smoking. “Black coffee, Beer and Bourbon, I replied.” He explained that these beverages strip the naturally present protective mucous layer that lines the inside of my mouth. He suggested eating a banana or drinking milk before lighting up and to lay off the coffee and whiskey. Bingo, problem solved. Hope this helps and maybe saves someone a raw mouth.

    Best regards,
    Jimbo
