For a pipe, a good old wood strike anywhere kitchen match.
For cigars I just use one of my Zippo lighters.

I also used an S.T. Dupont, till recently. Mine's an old one, but still beautiful. I gave up a short while ago so it's relegated to a drawer for now. They're a proper lighter!

Cigars with a cedar stick, not a match.

I tried the cedar stick. I got a nice draw without much bitterness towards the end. I took one of the movable walls from my humidor and broke it up into large matches.
It's really windy at my condo and in the bay area here in CA so if you don't have a butane lighter someone else will and you've lost your chance.

For my pipe or a cigar, I use either a Zippo or a Red Head match.
When last in your lovely country I used strike anywhere kitchen matches!! They are illegal down under and have been for generations.

Thanked: 530Illegal?
I can think of a few obvious guesses but I'd rather not let my ignorance shine too brightly... Why would those be illegal?

I believe it may have been due to the fear of bushfires. or that they might rub together and explode in your pocket. Officialdom in Australia is ver keen on preventing any fun, you can hardly move for all the cottonwool wrapping. We are the Nanny State.

I think that true "strike anywhere" matches have been done away with here in the US as well. The wooden matches in use now look similar, but won't ignite on just any surface like the old ones would. I could, of course, be completely wrong.

Thanked: 7I for my cigarettes I use a zippo, which is plenty fancy for a terrible habit. For my cigars I keep it old school: match to light a $20 bill and laugh at the homeless children by my feet. HAHAHA I actually alternate between matches and my zippo for cigars depending on wind levels. I don't really notice any funky flavors.
