The copyright thing is 'mysterious' at times. For example quite often I listen to Rockabilly Radio online and many of the shows are available to re-listen to at a site called Mixed Cloud. However when when one of the DJ's devoted an entire show to Chuck Berry you couldn't re-listen to it here in the USA because there are different rules that apply here than elsewhere. Such as there can only be X-amount of an artists recordings played in a row AND OR in a show. So since the show was made up of 100% of Chuck Berry's work I couldn't re-listen to the show.

As far as YouTube, every once in awhile I'll go to re-listen to a tune or watch a video and a notice comes up saying that it had been removed due to copyright infringement.

I also believe that in Europe an artist loses their copyrights after a certain amount of time and it becomes public domain but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Anyway thanks for sharing some jazz with us! :

    My pleasure.

If this were a private blog with perhaps 50 members or so, it would not be uncommon to share music downloads and links becaue it's a small group of private members. I dont't think ASCAP nor BMI would be able to squawk too much about that. But on a public Forum, it's truly not a good idea to post a link for the general public to download a music file that is copyrighted. Sure, people do it, but it's not legal, and it's simply disrespectful if you do in fact respect the original musicians that wrote, produced and recorded the music.

Posting a link from Youtube gets us all off the hook. It's Youtube's responsibility, not ours, to uphold copyright. We're just posting a link to music on their site.

    My 2 Cents.

OK, for the Jazz Newbie, this is the MOST POPULAR and probably the MOST TALKED ABOUT JAZZ ALBUM EVER RECORDED.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (1959) - FULL ALBUM
If you only listen to ONE Jazz album in your entire life, make it this one.

Here is a legendary album. Duke Ellington at Newport 1956.

This is the live album recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956. It is the album where album half way through Duke's performance, people started heading back to their cars. Duke decided to play "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" with Paul Gonsolves on the Tenor Sax. Paul took a solo and had the crowd going nuts. Gonsolves ran his solo sax for 27 choruses. It was amazing. Everybody returned to their seats. A sexy blonde in a black dress actually got up on stage and danced. This was unheard of at Jazz concerts in the 50s. See the picture and you can just imagine how this helped get the crowd going in 1956. It was an amazing performance and is considered by many to be Ellington's pivotal moment on turning his career around.
