You will find that there is nothing so subjective as the appreciation of pipe tobacco. What one person loves will be horrible to another. Personally I like plain-Jane burley blends like Carter Hall, Granger, Prince Albert. These are often called "Geezer Blends" and that's not far from the truth in my case. I also like Virginia/Perique blends but they are not usually recommended for a starter tobacco. An inexpensive, extremely mild and very very sweet blend is the ubiquitous Captain Black. Myself, I don't care for it, but many folks do. Find something you like and enjoy it!

If you have a local tobacco shop, your best bet would be to head over, talk with the tobacconist, and try out a bunch of the house blends. Maybe I just lucked out, but the house blends at my local shop are awesome and they are also rather inexpensive.

Oh - you just can't resist the dark side! I knew it was only a matter of time.
BTW - smoking a pipe is a lot like Straight Razor Shaving. Do's and Dont's that make it more or less enjoyable. Personal preferences. Skill in packing, puffing, lighting and cleaning. And the most enjoyable - Acquisition Disorders! Pipes, tobacco, pouches, tampers, cleaning stuff, racks - be prepared my friend - be prepared!
