Hi Buckeye,
There are two aromatic tobaccos that I usually recommend for starters. The first is MacBaren's Vanilla Cream Loose Cut, and the second is Cornell & Diehl's Autumn Evening, which is cased with a very nice maple flavor.
If you are looking for a non-aromatic, I like Rattray's Marlin Flake. It's a nice Virginia Perique blend with some Cavendish. - very mild.
I would probably stay away from English blends as you get back in. Latakia is definitely an acquired taste.

Thanked: 983Mmmmmmm, Borkum Riff Cherry Cavandish. I've tried many a tobacco, but I always find my way back to that one. Currently smoking some godawful garbage called Penzance...The smell reminds me of Mosquito Coils made out of cow dung.
Being a one bowl a day sort of bloke, a pack of tobacco lasts a long time for me.
Enjoy it, in moderation I say.

There are so many pipe tobaccos of different tastes, but IMHO new smokers should maybe start with mild and/or aromatic tobaccos before trying any hard core strongs.
Peterson has some excellent aromatic tobaccos. Sweet Killarney comes to mind right now. Vanilla is another excellent choice as Alembic already stated.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

Thanked: 1262Buckeye,
I think there is a tinderbox at the tri-county mall. A quick google search shows this place over on walnut.

Sorry you don't enjoy it. I like it very much.
As to what to smoke. Hmmmm. McClelland 5100 (Red Cake) is pretty good for beginners, as well as breaking in a new pipe. Don't pay much attention to the smell. It kind of reminds me of catsup. But the smoking flavor and scent is very pleasant. To be honest, everyone has their own taste. What I like and enjoy is something others may not.
I recommend a trip to this site:Home Page You will learn a lot and get to know some great people...
