Thanked: 150I use a wax seal on our Christmas letters to friends and family, and for invitations to special gatherings. I love the look, feel and formality of a sealed envelope. My seal is a stylized H.

I bet it would look neat on legal documents as well
Although they have probably lost their legal significance so you'd still need to add your manual signature.
Interestingly, seals are still used by governments to validate their documents.
The apostile that was attached to the court certified copy of my marriage certificate (state of california) had an imprint stamped in the paper, as well as a stamp on a gold (probably fake) seal that was internationally recognized as proof that the attached document is an official paper.Last edited by Bruno; 10-03-2010 at 06:00 PM.

That's too funny!
I will send out special occasion letters, written with a fountain pen, and sealed with a dark burgandy letter "L"
I have seen a rebirth of the hand written letter to give an extra special meaning to the note. I blame the internet and email for this. When was the last time you wrote a heart felt letter via an email? I will just send the basics, write in pigeon english, phases and cript, as well as poor grammer and diction.
I don't write letters on good paper everyday, just as I don't shave with my straight everyday, but when I do, it is the best of times.

Do we need to add Pen's & Paper to this thread... I very much enjoy writing with a Fountain Pen on Fine Linen Paper... That stuff again has been put away at home...
Some linen paper is very expensive... I guard that with my life...

Thanked: 150We have an embossed seal on our marriage certificate too. (To insert the cheesy/sappy part of the seal, we were married in the City of Loveland, and the seal used is special to that city given its name). The seal is still used by the Vatican (from what I understand, as I'm not catholic) for important and formal documents. I don't know if they still use the lead seals, or if it is just wax now.

I seal all physical corrospondence. I write everything with a fountain pen, even when taking notes at work.
I frequently use calligraphy when it's not appropriate. I have a love of writing and all that goes with it.
I mostly use the wax beads (so I can mix and make different colors) heated in a metal spoon over a flame. Depending on the corrospondence my envelopes are sealed with either a dragon or a thistle.
Never had USPS return on, although occasionally the recipient will tell me the seal had broken during shipping. I don't put them in another envelope, either.

One of my middle names is Gunn, which is a Scottish clan name. The crest is below and I have a signet ring with just the hand holding the sword part of the crest. I have occasionally used it to seal letters.

Thanked: 0For what it's worth, making a press yourself out of some hand crafted wood and either melting wax against it or even just using it with ink leads to incredible fun results.
With the products I make though, doing a metal seal with engraving really makes an impression.
