    Thanks for all the great responses everyone. I do appreciate it.

    So here what I'm going to do in the short term. (i.e. tonight.) I dont exactly want to go to a beer bar or a brew pub just to figure out if I even like the stuff. Somehow going somewhere makes me nervous. But there is a local market/cafe that sells some semi local beer I think I'll give a try. The have beer from the Grand Teton Brewing Co. Unfortunately it is only available on tap so no take home there. But they also carry beers from Epic Brewing in Salt Lake City in UT. I figure I'll give one of those a shot. If you have the time to waste check out the site and tell me what you think I should get.

    Have a great day,

    Some stores will sell micro brews by the bottle. It is a little more expensive by the bottle, but it is a great way to try different beers. I'd also recommend if you have a favorite pizza place or restaurant, see what they offer the next time you go out to eat.

    If you want to try a brown ale, one that should be available in your area is Moose Drool Brown Ale from Big Sky Brewing Co.located in Missoula,Montana. It is a nice brown ale IMO and goes great with food.

    Try different beers, different styles and pair them with different foods. You will discover what you like. Have fun and enjoy.

    Well played good Sir. I must wholeheartedly agree, there are beers that I like more than others but to use a famous sailor axiom, "any port in a storm." Contrary to popular belief, purchase price is not a reliable predicter of how good a beer is. There are many affordable beers that are indeed quite enjoyable (i.e. PBR, Amberbock, Busch Light, Tecate, Modelo Negro, Yuengling Black and Tan, Red Stripe, Fosters, etc.)

    Consume and Drink Tea. Unless you're pool-side in the midday sun. Then drink Fortified Iced Tea! (forget the beer).

    +1 to the tasting, easily found at local breweries.

    As for a starter, i would have to ask what do you expect a beer to taste like, I'm sure you've smelled it, what does the smell bring to mind. If you can give an idea of what you'd think it would taste like it may help for us to give reccomendations. For instance: (just an opinion)

    if you expect:

    Sweet= Honey brown ale

    Bitter= most IPA's, (Stone brewery)

    Nutty, earthy= stouts (guinness)

    if we had more info i think we could give a better idea of what would suit you, and where to find it. I can say that i had started with Guinness, and Murphy's Stout... i guess its just par for the course being a Irish kid born and raised in South Boston.

    If a beer sampler is available, go for that. They're often affordable. Also, some brew establishments will offer you a small taste of different beers gratis. Just ask.

    Just have fun and drink responsibly. You'll soon find what you like. If you go to a bar, ask the bartenders for samples of a few of their drafts. Read books if you like, that way you have the broad strokes on the difference of beers, ie ales, lagers, porters, stouts, etc. The advice of the other gentlemen who posted before me will steer you in the right direction too. Just know yourself, and do the right thing from there.
    My Favorites are Pilsner Lagers
    Eggenberg Schloss from Austria is so clean it's like drinking driven snow.
    Have fun.-J PHD in Beer
