Thread: No Longer Available.

I am sure that we have wished we had obtained something and did not have the money at the time or decided to wait until later and then the item was discontinued or no longer available for various reasons. Here are three things I wish were still available:

1. Zodiac SeaWolf and Super SeaWolf watches. These watches were great and sold in the PX at most military facilities during the sixty's. Wish I had bought one.

2. Renauld of France Spectacular Sunglasses. I did get a pair of these and one day at work I set them down and received a call I had to respond to and upon return they were missing. They were the Official glasses of Air France and of the 1964 Olympics. They were fantastic.

3. Sero Shirts. When I was in college this was "THE" shirt. I wore them for years. They were expensive but lasted forever. I have not seen any in men's clothing stores in years.

Anyone else have a "No longer available" story?

This may sound a little silly, but I'm being very serious here:

A long while ago, I used a hair product made by Salon Selectives. It was cheap, not greasy, and allowed me to do whatever with my very thick hair. Anyway, I used to buy this stuff by the skid, and then one day it was up and gone. No stores, no web stores, nothin'.

That was last year, and since then, I've been taking the clippers to my hair, down to #1 (about 1/8").

That's my "no longer available" story. I'm sure I have others, but this is the one literally "off the top of my head".

Edgeworth Ready Rubbed pipe tobacco. This was the King of the American Burley fleet back in the Golden Age of pipes (30's-50's) absolutely delicious stuff all burley, all the time. A couple years ago, they quit making it forever, along with Rum and Maple (which was the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked)

When i got my first job at 16 (1995) i made £1.99 an hour, the reason i took this job was to buy a guitar it cost £1250 at the time and i worked non stop every weekend, didn't spend a penny for a year until i had that guitar. It was pointy black metal guitar and at the time i loved it, however it got traded for something else pretty quick.

At the time my guitar teacher offered to sell me his old beat up but in, perfect working order, 1959 fender strat. I thought he was having a laugh, no way that beat up piece of junk was worth that. It was. and now it's worth 12-14k.. not that the value of it matters, what matters is that i've been fortunate enough to play a few vintage strats, and no new guitar comes close to the sound or feel of them. Hindsight eh?

The thing that I miss most that is no longer available is gasoline for under $1 per gallaon. Hell, I'd settle for under $3 right now.

I remember that tobacco. I had an Uncle who smoked Edgeworth. When I smoked a pipe there was a tobacco called Three Nuns. It is one of those, "no longer available" that has gone on.

How about high grade pipes like barling when you could buy them for twenty bucks or so. Of course twenty bucks was half of a weeks pay back then. Dewayne, i remember the Renauld Of France sunglasses you're talking about. I think they were like $100 or so. I remember my 8th grade phys ed coach had a pair. They were snazzy. Pinned and recessed S&W magnum revolvers with a deep blue that you don't see today. The Colt Python wasn't pinned and recessed but what a work of art it was with the action slick as a whistle.

The old Case XX pocket knives, with the old red bone, green bone and Rogers bone scales, that had a bit more class than those made today. Robesons, the old C. Bertram Hen & Roosters stags and pearls were fine too. Pocket knives that didn't look like they came from a space ship. I even fondly remember the old wooden cased TVs with the adjustment knobs for when the picture rolled vertical or horizontal. Every time you get up to adjust it the picture would stop rolling.... and start again when you sat back down. A PITA but fond memories nonetheless.

Ah Case XX pocket knives, I still say none better - particularly their carbon steel blades. I cut my teeth at the ripe old age of 9 years old, receiving a 3 blade bone handle whittler which became my constant companion for the next 8 years of my life until it fell from a hole in my pocket and was lost forever. I loved that knife. Used it to carve many a heart and initials in tree bark in my adolescense.

I wish I still had it.

Jaguar E-types. Can't anyone make a decent copy for $50K or so? Any man with blood in his veins and a heart to push it (and $50K of course) would stand in line for weeks.

Agree about the Colt Pythons. At one point I owned 6 -- stainless and blued in 4- 6- and 8-inches.

I sold them all in order to buy an E-type.

I remember the actor Michael Parks who later played in the TV series. Then Came Bronson". Before this he made a movie with Ann Margret called. Bus Rileys Back in Town". In the movie Ann Margret drove a white E-type Jag. That red hair and the white Jag were one of the great moments in history.
