So much in common; I'm 60 and act like I'm 16 some days. Gotta stay connected to today's youts.

I love a lot about the old days, from what I hear. However, I'm 27 and quite happy living in this time period :P
I love all my toys, with or without wheels! Toys with a purpose?? Can't beat it! Str8s are intimidating and stimulate my ability to concentrate and stay focused. Put with coordination- its almost a sport in a sense. A good challenge is always worth the effort. I'm just learning the str8 art, but I'd hate to not have my future kids get the chance to learn something like this.
Btw.. You're all making me want to smoke right now but I recently quit for employment purposes..
The one thing I can say about the SE types is that everyone wants to help one another.. This forum is the quintessential example of that.

I love some of the old ways, but make no mistake, I am perfectly happy living in this era, and not dying of tb, pneumonia, miner's lung, or any of the other things that would kill people long before they got old.
Someone linked a pdf once with a medical report on the circumstances of the grinders of the Joseph Rodgers factory.
It talked about a great revolution, namely having an exhaust fan in the workplaces, so that all the grit and metal dust was removed from the building instead of breathed in. Fork grinders had the worst job, dues to the nature of fork grinding. They didn't live past 28. File makers had better lungs but died insane due to the large amount of lead they consumed while working on a lead plate. Razor grinding was actually one of the best and most coveted jobs, going often from father to son.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
To spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the Last Day

I shave with straights, collected smoking pipes and now smoke cigars. Hmmmmmmm. Maybe there is a connection although I drink Single Barrel Bourbons.

For me it's always the path less travelled. Straights, pipes. When I learned how to fly, it was helos I was really interested in. Now that I'm into boating, it's sailing, not motorboats. Violin, sure why not. Sometimes it was cool stuff and sometimes pure nerd. Heck,, I played D and D with the best of 'em. I think it's a just deep seeded need to be different.

Thanked: 983I definately think it might be a need to be different (as well as a love of the old ways of living). I do a lot of things to be different (as well as for the love of it), but I don't go out of the way to stand out from a crowd...Unfortunately doing things different to others does tend to put you in the lime-light sometimes. Things as simple as smoking a pipe in public draw attention to you (well me anyway ). Heck, I wonder what people would think if I chose to shave in public...Might be arrested I reckon.
