Well when you think about it, the cigarette is much like the mach 3 to the pipe's straight razor. Much like a cartridge, the cigarette is a quick, easy way to get a fix - you don't have to think about it, it's just there and done. The pipe takes time, much like a straight, and you must learn how to use it. You cannot rush into it, or you will wind up with a burnt tongue and a bad experience. You must prepare the tobacco, much like a lather, by drying the tobacco to the right moisture, as well as rubbing it to your preference and packing it with a judicious touch. Like the carefully yet confidently executed strokes of a straight shaver, the experienced pipe smoker learns to feel the rhythm of his instrument and puffs in such a way so as to not smoke too hot or too cool. They are both rituals which at least for me take on an almost zen-like quality, letting me reflect without interruption and leaving me calm and having found balance.
And of course, much like with razors, many find great pleasure in acquiring estate pipes and restoring them to their former beauty, not to mention exploring different tobaccos, which much like various soaps and aftershaves can add a new dimension to the experience.

I started looking into straight because I didnt like the mass-produced options. I cant stand Scotch, I have 5 pipes 2 were my fathers and I havent smoke any of them in years, I love cigars but have other things that bring me more enjoyment like fly fishing. I build my own fly rods and tie my own flies. I even build a 5' fly rod for my grand-daughter and taught her to roll cast it when she was 3.
And this is mostly for AFDavis, I played a mean (actually neutral-good) cleric back in the day and was a bastard of a DM. And I would love to learn to sail.

I understand entirely. I write with fountain pens in Spencerian Script, I still write letters, I am delving into straight razors, I am an adamant practitioner of Bushcraft (Gotta love a well made Axe!), I am an active shooter who takes pride in marksmanship and historical rifles. My friends call me "Victorian." I love that compliment!

Thanked: 1160Latecomer on this but I have to agree with nose on this one.I grew up in the woods of northern Michigan on a lake. With all the mosquitos and lake water I gulped down on accident while swimming we never heard of nor worried about west nile virus or brain eating amoebas or zebra mussels or lamprey eels. Now I'm all paranoid of my home enviroment thanks modern media and world. Thanks for all the GMO veggies and corn syrup and obnoxious cell phones and etc. I can't wait for the mother of all sunspots to knock us down a peg and make us self reliant and humble again. although I've said before I would miss talking to my overseas friends that I never would have met without a computer....Still...simple and humble is good .

Thanked: 2It was delightful reading through this thread. Sometimes when I mull through SRP threads I feel like a bit of an outsider because it does seem the majority are hunters and men of the days of yore. I am a little more mainstream for better or worse. Don't get me wrong, I love my cigars and scotch. I just view the straight razor shaving as more enjoyable than the mach 3. I don't collect straights or anything really.
I am trully thankful for this community, it is enlightening on a number of levels.

Yes, it was a simpler life. It was also usually a shorter life. Whenever I get nostalgic and think about a time machine, I remember there were also no antibiotics. You could die from a bladder infection. If I was born 50 years earlier I would already be dead. My grandfather didn't live past 46.

Thanked: 884What America needs now is a good five cent nickel.
I like old stuff and doing things the old ways myself. While I do have some high speed. low drag WWII era firearms. My favorite rifle to shoot is my flinter.
built and "scrimmed" my own horns.
No calluses on my thumb from starting my old knuck when I had it either.
My pan is kick only and will remain as such until I can't kick it. When that happens, I'll get rid of it and hang up my spurs.
