    Default Bourbon Season!

With the cooler weather and shorter days of fall upon us, this not too young man's fancy turns to thoughts of bourbon. A night cap of 3 fingers of Maker's Mark with just a spritz of ginger ale is just what the doctor ordered. My normal rotation is Maker's, Jameson, and Jim Beam but I think around Christmas time some George Dickel or Wild Turkey might be in order.

Hunting season and Bourbon go together like shoes and socks. A bottle of Woodford Reserve and a bag of Red Man. I want some.

Christmas and Jim Beam (12 year old) with home-made nog (no sugar for us borderline diabetics - we're used to splenda/equal/whatever) is a staple 'round these parts.

Bourbon is nice. I've never tried it with ginger ale. I think I will, thanks.

What's ta' hunt in D.C., besides "parking spots"? You are correct though, just took an antelope with my son and a few buds out on the plains last week. Although hot during the day, the temp dropped at night and the bourbon flowed.

It is always bourbon season year round here...

Bulleit has become my "go to" everyday bourbon. When I am feeling special a bottle of Blanton does the trick.

Maker's Mark is always a go-to, with or without soda/ginger ale. If it's around, Basil Hayden's is another preference of mine, nice and neat.

'Figures Ol'GI would have good taste. I've migrated to the scotch side of the house, but never turn down a fine sour mash. 'Don't consume enough of either to register on a shot glass anymore, but the flavor remains a treat.

Now about this abomination of adding pollutants - aaarrghhh. Do you drink flavored coffee too?

"Pollutants" in my case are merely to prime the pump for the first round and we're not talking about a carefully measured single shot with the rest of the glass being topped off with pollutants. I clearly said "a spritz of ginger ale" meaning 3 fingers of bourbon with about a tablespoon of ginger ale for the first round. After the first round it becomes a 5 fingers: 1 teaspoon affair. By the third and subsequent rounds (when I'm fully in the spirit of celebrating life in my own special way) it usually becomes a glass of bourbon and to hell with the spritz

I think Scotch is likely my next big step in the spirits world. I had a very good friend that would drink absolutely nothing except coffee in the morning and Glenfiddich any other time of day. As a younger man, despite near heroic consumption of most any other spirit that was available (ah...Cuervo Gold) I never took to Scotch. I'm not sure why that's so but perhaps its time to re-evaluate that through the filter of much more life experience. If I've learned anything in my near half century of being alive, it's that sometimes you just have to insist on pampering yourself. If you wait for others to pamper you, you are often times disappointed. Sometimes a simple indulgence such as a nice straight razor shave, an antique pipe full of a delicious codger burley, basking in the aroma of a good cigar or enjoying a wonderful adult beverage (in moderation of course) is just what the doctor ordered.
