Thanked: 21I killed a rabbit once. I was in college, sitting on my back porch drinking a beer with my Browning compound hunting bow and small game tips on the arrows. I had to shoot that rabbit 3 times before I killed it. The first shot ripped its lower jaw off. The second stuck between its shoulder blades, and the thing tried to lamely hop back through the fence hole it came from, but the arrow sticking out of it stopped it. When it turned back around to look at me, I shot a 3rd arrow, and skewered it from mouth to anus.
Needless to say, I haven't hunted rabbit since

Thanked: 983Probably a good thing you haven't. Proficiency on moving (non living) targets and various distances should be acquired with any hunting tool before you try out hunting. Saves a lot of needless harm to the animal that way. People still miss, but misses and woundings are greatly lessened with proper practice. I bow hunted years ago, but only after some serious time put into practice with a bow hunting associations approved training programme.

Thanked: 21Did you ever bow hunt rabbit?
during that experience, the rabbit wasn't moving, but from the time of release until contact, the rabbit moved just enough to miss the kill zone that first shot. The second should have killed it, and I don't know why it didn't. I was a good shot at the time, could hit a quarter at 40 yards more often than not. My thinking is that the rabbit's kill zone is the size of a dime.

Thanked: 983Yes, both rabbit and goat hunting with a bow. Beer was only ever involved at the completion of the days hunt.

I hunted rabbits in North Carolina when I was young, using my grandfather's Steven's Savage .410 ga, handed down to me. I had my Beagle with me; sometimes we would get one. Most of the time I just froze my ass off in the woods.

I gotta go with Mick on this one. I've hunted rabbit, squirrel and other critters with a 22 and like he said practice makes for less wounded animals. Looks like you had a great day hunting with your puppies, but man, how many aspirin you need after all that baying ? Looks like a blast but I have always hunted being stealthy, although hunting with the dogs looks like fun. Hope you had a good day. And to the rest of you remember practice makes for a one-shot kill.
