I guess I'm lucky. I only left my hometown for a few years and returned. To me, nothing brings back the memories quite like a crisp October evening. The chilly wind, the sound of the leaves all around, the hog roast's, the smell of the smoke from all the wood burners and backyard camp fires. Just thinking about it has me longing for autumn.

I was stationed at Ft. Sam Huston ,San Antonio Texas in 83...they put the base on alert when they had a snowstorm (1 inch). Never saw such a sight. Pickup trucks fishtailing everywhere and people trying to shovel with brooms ?! It was very foreign to me. As for snowstorms in Michigan . I guess things have changed since I left. Back when I was young , Everyone that had any smarts got out there truck and plow and commenced with removing snow while in the meantime getting around via snow mobile. We always knew if someone was from outta town if they tried to ride around in their convenentional type vehicles. My buddies and I used to make our spending money pushing cars outta snowbanks and shoveling roofs, sidewalks and driveways.

I always laugh at southerners (you may read that as "all Americans") who whine about snow, especially those south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Your post just reminds me of how insular some areas of the world are.
"When I was a kid the snow was hip-deep!" Yeah, but you were only 4 feet tall.

About 30 miles east of Carbondale, in Williamson County--near Johnston City if you know where that is. But I heard a lot of trains out that way too. And then I went to college in Carbondale and, yes, the IC is one of my fond memories.
