Thanked: 983Learning how to ride a bicycle
Learning how to shoot
Learnng how to ride a motorbike
Learning about loss of a loved one
Learning about the meaning of love
But these aren't really items/objects are they?!
So My first bicycle has led to a lifetime love of cycling, although I haven't always kept it up over the years, I've always loved it and still cycle when I can.
My first rifle an old Stirling .22 that took the place of a handed down .177 air rifle. This has led to a life time of shooting and as an off shoot to this, Archery.
Learning how to ride a motorbike has led to my main transport being a motorbike for the last 25 or so years. Never have been a fan of cars.
The loss of a loved one has taught me that it's ok to cry, and still be a man. It also led to a deeper understanding of Love. Deeper still due to the birth of my children.
Other things that have changed my life:
Joining the Army and regretting not having done more than the required time.
Learning how to make knives and leatherworking...Where's that old Manual Arts teacher who called me "a no account" now?!
Music. The saviour of my spirit when it comes to the low points in life; which leades to the next two points;
Learning how to play Guitar and buying my first one. I now have four in a range of qualitys. A low end with a back carry case for motorbike travel. And a high end Australian made Maton that is one of the sweetest guitars I've ever had the priviledge to play.
Learning how to play the Irish whistle and discovering Bernard Overton Low whistles. Led to learning how to make whistles for myself as well. I now own several high end whistles, and an Irish Flute, and a few of my own home made whistles that are the pick of them when it comes to travel on the bike.
Last, but not least...My wife. She and the kids keep me on the rails and keeps in check, my past, wild and unruly nature.
There are many other things that have changed my life, but these will do for this list.

Some of the things that had a positive effect on me -- or that I used as an incentive for spiritual growth.
1. Joining The Boy Scouts of America.
2. My first real job in high school.
3. Starting college -- when I had teachers for the first time in my life who did not compare me to my overachieving older brother. . . .
4. Naval Nuclear Power School.
5. Ballistic missile submarines at the height of the Cold War.
6. Getting married.
7. Becoming a volunteer fireman.
8. Becoming a volunteer emergency medical technician and Civil Defense rescue lieutenant
9. My first personal computer in 1982.
10. Getting divorced
11. My first email account in 1992.
12. The Internet.
13. The World Wide Web.
14. Motorcycles.
15. Becoming profoundly deaf.
16. Multiple sclerosis.
17. Straight Razors.
18. SRP.
19. A Course In Miracles.

08-31-2012, 03:43 AM #34Book of Mormon
Yeah, I am Mormon. Not a very good one all of the time. I am actually a convert. From southern baptist to mormon, that was a mind bender. Went on a mission a year after I got dunked. I went to Brazil and dunked a few people myself. Left the church for a few years, cough, ok ten years. Back at it again, trying not to get pissed off at the leadership. Anyway, that book has shaped me and put me on a certain path that I cannot get off of. In a way, it lead me to SRP and straight razor shaving.Last edited by Mephisto; 08-31-2012 at 03:58 AM. From their stillness came their non-action...Doing-nothing was accompanied by the feeling of satisfaction, anxieties and troubles find no place

Strictly related to objects and items so that I don't start rambling:
The internet. I communicate with people around the world. I am online throughout the day. I don't spend hours on end on my computer, I just like the ability to keep up to date on communications and news. The day they figure out how to jack an internet connection into a living brain, I'm in. For the revelation space fans: I'd become a conjoiner as soon as I could find someone to hook me up.
My first straight razor. After a couple of false starts, I ended up here, and learned to shave, hone and restore razors. And now I am learning to be a blacksmith apprentice which is what I've always thought I'd become.
My first assignment during my engineering internship, which made me realize that more than anything else in the world, I wanted to learn to program computers to make machines do cool stuff. that was quite a drastic change because I rather hated computers and programming up to that point.Last edited by Bruno; 08-31-2012 at 11:04 AM.
