You may have comparable steels though. For example, nobody knows the name 'O1' in Belgium, but there is an identical steel called DIN2510 or something like that. We use German identifications (Deutsche Industrie Norm IIRC) in most of western Europe. If you can talk with someone at a steel mill and explain what you are looking for, they may be able to give you local equivalents that are just as good.

Failing that, you can always ask someone in the US to buy a piece, saw it into blanks and mail them to you.

Or you can do what I am currently doing with my meat cleaver project: buy an old cleaver and turn it into something else.

Jantz here in the US sells O-1 in 1/4x1x18 for US $14.95. Google knifemaking.com. If they ship down under, you could save a ton!

Wow! Those are really kewl. Please post them when you have scales on them. It looks like it might be a little tricky to integrate scales.

    Great work!

    Thanks!

Only just saw this thread, I'm late for the party. Really looking forward to seeing these finished, they're going to be EPIC! Lovely work indeed...

Mocked this up on the week end out of a bit of 5mm mild steel. Still very rough but gives you the idea. The lower part under the cut out still feels very solid.
I was also trying out some file work, which looks like a dog's breakfast.

    What does everyone think?

Looks awesome so far! Great design and great execution. Look forward to seeing the final product and hearing how it shaves.

Looks really interesting, str8. I think it's worth a shot in tool steel. I've been thinking about a cut-out in the middle of the blade.

That's a mean looking beast (in a good way).

5mm = 3/16. Considering the width of that razor I wonder how you'll be able to hone it up on the hones without some serious spine widening. A healthy 7mm chunk of steel would have been easier imo.
