Thanked: 4942Every now and then, one of the members comes up with a good deal from an antique store or knife show, but for the most part, these sources have always been unreliable and highly overpriced for garbage most of the time.
I would still say to keep on looking for the good deals as you can find them, especially at estate sales.
Have fun.

Around these parts, the antique store prices seem to be reasonable. I usually see razors in the $10-15 range, and I've seen a couple as high as $25. I've gotten some nice users from antique mall-style stores.
Western Pennsylvania seems to be some kind of mecca for straight razor stuff, though. I can't explain it, but I've seen a disproportionate amount of stuff on eBay from Pittsburgh and the surrounding region. It can't be the steel connection, because a lot of these are imported razors like Solingen blades. Maybe around here people just keep stuff for a long time?

With all that, I've picked up some really nice finds at about $20CDN a pop, including a minty Heartring that I enjoyed shaving with yesterday

A while back I was at an antique store and was looking at several straights. I came across one that could have been rather nice were it not for the blade being almost completely covered in rust. Too bad because it had a worked back and marbled scales similar to what I've seen at John Crowley's site. I doubt the blade was worth saving but the asking price was about sixty plus. I think the dealer was overly optimistic but I understand why they try to charge so much. After all, rent for retail space can be a killer.

Not quite sure what it is that you are asking. Things in Hawaii are a bit more expensive. Milk is somewhere around $6/gal and cars are marked way up from MSRP (Motorcycle with MSRP of $3000 will run about $4500-$5000), but I didn't think that it'd apply to something like a razor. Too bad I can't pay in coconuts

The regular excuse here is "they are always looking for props for films."

Toronto does have a decent film industry since filming big city scenes here is cheaper than in the States, but I can't believe that THAT MANY films involve straight razors

It truely depends on the condition of the razor. Here in NYC I try to stay away from the antique stores as they all thing they have struck gold. I went into one store and the blade had a hugh hunk taken out if it and it was rusted to boot and they were pricing it at $75. I just laughed at the owner and walked out.
