Glass bedding a hone?
I didn't really know where to put this because while it does have something to do with hones its not really about the hone specifically.
Anyways, I just got two primitive arks from dans. They are large and the back side is very uneven and chippy and rough cut. Only one side is lapped. The thickness varies from .5 inches to almost 2 inches and so it is impossible to use them as a bench stone and be steady but they are quite to heavy to hold and hone.
So my solution is to glass bed the stones in a box. Or silicone bed it. I have never done either of these before but I am familiar with the concept. The only thing I was worried about is the release agent. I think a paste or something you have to brush on would not be the best because of all the nooks and crannies and crevices and tiny cracks. I was thinking more towards silicone bedding because its probably cheaper in the quantity that I need. Is there a liquid release agent maybe something I could dip it into? Would vegetable oil work? I have no idea. Never done it before.

I would make a wedge of wood that is the same angle as your hone and it should set level on a table, counter bench.....

2 part polyurethane is what you want. It's used to make plastic molds. It dries clear and has the rigidity of plexiglass.
You can coat the stone with cooking spray so that it doesn't stick like glue.
Invert the stone so that the flat lapped side is against a table, build a box around it slightly higher than the rough side, mix the 2 part polyurethane and pour it into the box.
You can buy the 2 part poly online or at most larger hobby stores. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Thanked: 3228Do you want to have the hone so it releases from the bedding material with the bedding material permanently attached to the box or hone and bedding material permanently bonded together but will lift out of the box as one?

Thanked: 3I've only bedded a couple of my rifles, but I ended up using devcon plastic steel bedding. For the release compound I used kiwi shoe polish in the neutral color.
Since you're using a stone, I wonder if you could use Saran Wrap around the stone, then the shoe polish on that as a release. That may take the porous nature of the stone from the equation.
If you do attempt it, make sure you fill all the chips on the sides and knock off any odor protrusions. Anything like that can cause a mechanical lock.
I know it's for rifles, but this also explains using putty and other parts pretty well.

Thanked: 13249The best/easiest Bedding Kit I have used to date is the "Bedrock" one from Miles Gilbert it is infinitely adjustable and all Rifle Bedding systems come with a release agent, however simple masking tape on the hone covered with the agent would be much much much safer
Miles Gilbert Bedrock Glass Bedding Kit
You could do a few hones with that kit, and yes it would self level with the proper consistency adjustment, that is exactly what it is designed to doLast edited by gssixgun; 09-09-2014 at 02:50 AM.
