If you use sandpaper just wet it and fold it around a brick or something else flat and stable
Have you ever tried the 3m lapping film such as these? The grit range of these starts much coarser then the Norton and gets more fine as well. The best suggestion I've seen so far is to fix them to a strip of glass for a near true surface.

I haven't tried it but many on here use it with great results.

Make sure it cuts hair very well at 1k, after that it's refining and polishing

Will do, thanks. Personally do you use the HHT or some other measure at 1K?

The more....the better for those types of pans. Its what makes them work so well. [emoji6]

No I would not ever consider them (DMT's) a SR hone EXCEPT at the below Honing level edge restoration levels like I already said

Yes I could tell you all about how DE edges compare to SR edge (search the Vorheaven paper )

I could tell you more about hones and their reaction to SR's then most people want to hear about, in fact I can talk your ears off about it.. Most of that is already written here in thousands of threads and posts about honing...

But like many newbs you already have an "Idea" of what you think is correct

Let me give you the best advice about honing you are ever going to get to make for the easiest path

Buy a set of Naniwa SS hones

    1k
    3k
    8k
    12k

Buy a DMT 325, Trend dual grit, or Atoma 400 to keep them even and clean

Learn to hone with these, until they get boring and the edges are freaking awesome then do what you want after that..

Now that was the nicest thing I can do for you... That comes from not only my own honing experiences but from teaching literally hundreds of people now over the last 8 years in person..
You took the words out of my mouth Glenn.....literally. [emoji482]

In case anyone was interested in how the scales turned out, I had some time to kill so I did some more on them. Here is the final product.

This one is my voluntary confession of how I raped the steel. Another rookie mistake. I still have a sick feeling in my stomach from this little squiggly "2" that I accidentally etched into the blade. Took a bit of effort to find the lighting that would show my shame.

Still.... Not bad for your first.
There will be plenty more down the line. The more you do...the better you'll get. You can always go back and fix your earlier creations once you've got it nailed down .

Tru Dat! It's been so much fun so far that I'm already keeping an eye out for my next purchase. I still wish I had not broken the original scales, but that's spilled milk at this point I suppose.

As soon as I get the nerve up to touch this steal to grit I'll be embarking on my honing journey. Most likely be back on here just so gssixgun can deliver a big helping of "I told you so" and "they never listen". wish me luck.
