Thread: ideas needed

I've got a problem that needs to be dealt with post haste and figured who better to ask for
ideas than you all. I need a locking razor storage box, that won't be easily gotten into (by someone other than myself) and will hold all of my razors and supplies.

The problem: Mom has been suffering from Alzheimers, today she became very irrational. We have decided to lock up our sharp objects and guns. As I have only 3 guns, that is no problem, I just leave them all unloaded with no shells around. However, my straights are a problem. I thought about putting a hasp on my silverware/razor storage box, but thought that would be too easily taken off. A friend is loaning me a small safe, but I'm worried about moisture getting to the razors. (humidity build-up).

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Get one of those little can shaped silica dehumidifiers like you would put in the gun safe, ought to work for razors too, and they are cheap!

I was just going to suggest a small safe. You could use charcoal to keep moisture levels down.

I have young children so I have a similar situation in needing to have the razors locked up. What I did was bought one of those hinges that one side has a slot and the other has a ring so you can put a lock on it. I then put the razors in a drawer and have the hinge / lock screwed to the inside cabinet and the side of the drawer. It is a little difficult sometimes unlocking it since it isnt visible but it certainly does the trick. If my description wasnt accurate enough let me know I would be glad to take a picture. Also if you decide to go this route make sure you verify the hinge will fit through the space between the drawer and the cabinet. I originally was going to have the lock on the bottom but it would only fit on the side and I wound up drilling twice.

I keep my razors locked up in a fire proof locking file box, specifically a Sentry 1170. I took thin cardboard and made dividers (with slots about 1" square) that hold my razors standing up. It holds 96 razors. These aren't all my razor, just the ones I shave with. The expensive ones are in my gun safe,

I have been dealing with an Alzheimers sufferer for several years. You might re-think locking the guns up. Alzheimers affects rationality and although you know the gun is not loaded, a situation could arise where somebody else doesn't know it's not loaded. Wouldn't want anything bad happening to your mom.

A small safe seems to be the most sensible idea. One suggestion for moisture control is copper sulphate. It removes water from the air much quicker than silica gel. You can tell when it has absorbed its capacity of water because it turns from white to blue. Then, rather than replacing it, you can pop it in the oven at higher than 210 F & it goes white again. If memory serves, it is much cheaper than silica & reusable. Hope this helps.

Could do one of the small tool boxes. They can have a lock placed on them.

Here is an idea that I recently came upon. These are about $20.00 at the local Walmart. I am sure they can be located elsewhere. I added the red felt to keep the razors from sliding around quite so much.

You could also do a similar thing with a fishing tackle box where they shelves fold out in exactly this manner. Many of these have adjustable compartments. Some of them have locks or a place where a small key lock could be placed.
