That was very common in those days.

My barber, who shaved lots of men in the 60's and 70's with straight razors also told me that the wealthier customers had their own straight razors stored in the barber shop. Also, it was common that those wealthy customers booked shavings in their own houses. My barber told me that there were some rich customers that paid my barber to have him go to their house and shave them with their own straight razors.

I've posted some pics in the past. But my all time favorite is not a pic, but this video: YouTube - Broadway Barber

If this doesn't bring a little tear to your eye.....

Here's an article (obit) about Mr. Kay: http://www.nytimes.com/1999/05/18/ny...ies-at-80.html

Sure wish there was a shop like that near me.

At one time barbers used one community mug, brush and soap. After it was discovered that barbers were transmitting communicable diseases, it became law that each customer had his own mug and brush. Some were decorated, some were not, depending on the customer.

This is some great stuff - history is fantastic! So many things from the past have become niche movements to keep em alive - handtool woodworking, straight shaving - it is really nice to see the revival but sad that it is sometimes still considered a hobby when once it was just a part of life.

I recently bought this ad. As soon as I get it framed it will take it's rightful place on the wall in my shaving den. It combines my 2 loves. Shaving and Jeeps!

The video is not bad, but the obituary is excellent.
Thank you very much for bringing it to us.
