Thanked: 79Tommy,
I too will back up that last claim. I've had good razors from John Crowley (a member here) Dave Wessel , and Lynn Abrams. All have been outstanding, buy with confidence from these men. For older razors, it is hard to compete with the edges produced by Lynn Abrams and John Crowley. (Can't comment on the others because I haven't tried their razors) I am sure Lynn can produce an edge in 20 minutes that would take me an hour, although I am gaining on him, lol

I just spent the week buying up some razors on ebay. To be honest, I figured I would get screwed on a couple of them. I really wanted to have a nice representation of DD's, so I paid up for some. I must say that in the future I will only buy NOS or absolutley mint pieces. I enjoy restoration projects and will have some fun with the dogs I bought, but I think I have learned my ebay lesson. On a positive note, I bought a Fredr. Herder job on a lark (and for a song) because I used to have one of their fine knives. Well, I am most pleased with this knife as it has a beautiful beefy blade and is very well made. I can't wait to and shave with it. Any others have any experience with these?
I seem to be gravitating towards large blades as I go along. I s this the natural progression?

Thanked: 4942I think alot of people to progress to bigger blades. There are still some however, that like a 4/8 or 3/8 blade, but they seem to be the minority. This really is a subjective area but, a large blade with minimal pressure and a super shave is a wonderful ting.......lol. I have a couple of 5/8 th blades that shave so well, they will never leave my collection, but I have bought alot more 6/8 and 7/8 blades in the past few years. Lynn

Bigger Blades
Lynn,
I have mixed feelings on this. I love my Fil and W&B and Bengall that are 7/8 but I also like my Puma 4/8 at times. Like this AM I had gotten a great shave yesterday with my Fil but I needed a touch up today before work so I pulled out the 4/8 Puma and was happy with the results.
Hey as long as no one opens the door while I'm shaving I'm happy. lol

not an e-bay razor but.....
... found a seven day set made by mappin and webb for sale today.
of course i bought them and now i'm wondering if they are worth the money!
here's a quick rundown:
*made by mappin and web.
* M
trustworthy
mappin & webb
royal cutlery works
sheffield
on the shank. (the "trustworthy" is in a scroll)
*ivory scales - one with a large crack, not at the pivot pin, one with a small(tiny) crack again, not at the pivot pin. all pivots are nice and tight.
*5/8th hollow ground blades in cutlers(?) steel - some small marks on the back and tang but no rust whatsoever.
*on the top of each blade, the days of the week with scroll work engraved each side.
*jimps (or gimps?) on the underside of the shank only.
*in original box.
i'll get some pictures up when i get a chance, probably monday
so, what should i have payed?! once there's been some help, i'll tell all - if i've not been embarassed!
**edit: the wedges appear to be made of lead.**Last edited by johnnyhotdog; 09-25-2005 at 08:34 PM.

Thanked: 4942Mappin and Webb's are among my favorite straight razors. It is indeed a rare find to get one in nice shape. They are great shavers and usually easy to maintain. Another example of good Sheffield steel. Actually the company still makes silver ware and fancy serving items. Very cool. Lynn

it was a really lucky find - sat in the window of an antiques shop. as you can see they are a little tarnished around the pivot and as before, two have cracks but otherwise (apart from the dirt) seem perfect. i don't think they have seen much use either i picked them up for £55 which is around $96 i think
i don't know what the deal with the small blade is - i don't know if you can tell from the pictures, it is about an inch and a half long and has definately seen some use.
