I do not have a fountain pen. I do however use a mechanical watch I have to wind, I am a Marine, an Eagle Scout, and carry my HK USP .40SW wherever I go.
To answer your question, I think the one thing we all have in common is an enjoyment of things that most people would consider eccentric or crazy. For example how many times have you heard people say that they would never use a straight razor because 'they're afraid they would kill themselves'. If you wear a mechanical watch I'm sure you've heard this one: "Why would you buy a watch you have to wind everyday?"

I just reckon we're people who appreciate quality. Razors, pens, vinyl, opera, tea, coffee, wines, port, food... the list is endless, but it's all about quality.
