I used fountain pens when I was in the 5th grade, 11 years old, and I really enjoyed filling them with ink I bought. But no, I like ball points, especially the 50% of them that actually work. And my motivation to shave with a straight razor is merely that I was mildly annoyed by the fact that I'd intentionally ignored it forever, for no good reason. It's nothing more than knowing how to drive an automatic as well as a standard transmission and a clutch.
There's nothing special about it, just different, and as knowing both ways to drive just makes driving easier, in addition to DE shaving, knowing how to identify, sharpen, and use a straight razor effectively, at will, simply makes it easier to shave.
Yes, I love my DE razors, especially my most recent discovery, the Merkur Futur, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't used one. I can and do, shave every day with any razor I can hold in my hand, and that's the way I like it.

We're clearly a very diverse bunch in terms of age, nationality, politics, religion, temperament, interests ...
Maybe what we tend to have in common is a bent for being hands-on, for a little bit deeper involvement in what we're doing. I'd guess for example that among our American members, a higher percentage of us can and like to drive a standard transmission than in the population as a whole (I specify the U.S. because stick-shift driving is practically a lost art here). And maybe we tend to share, as somebody else has pointed out, a concern with quality, a respect for craftsmanship, and a distaste for the throwaway attitude that seems to be so prevalent.
That and the runes.

Thanked: 21Straight razors fit in to many of my other hobbies- rifle marksmanship, music (especially guitar), Mandarin Chinese- in a way that they all are either very personal or rather uncommon. They require a great deal of time and effort and trial and error to get correct consistently. They all require a fair amount of studying and reading to learn more. They all (in theory) can be done on a fairly strict budget- with a basic outlay for tools/gear, and some costs for supplies, one can spend a great deal of time and yet receive great enjoyment with minimal expense. The time spent journeying to the destination is always important- the random bits you pick up on the way, something that clicks and finally makes sense, and finally, the beauty when it all comes together.
That's all I've got for now.
