A great reply, GowriGowri!
It sounds like the Indian acquaintance of mine who is going to India in January, and is expecting to pick up a straight razor, will be disappointed. He said he has a friend living in India now who is scouting out sources of straight razors. Again, from what you said, and from my research... good luck!
Thanks, again...

Thanked: 3Thanks, LarryAndro.
Who knows, your friend might strike it lucky. A friend I spoke to thinks the straights her father shaved with might be around somewhere in the house (she and her brother threw away the strop because of the wallopings they got from it!), and promised to look for it. For all we know, there's a yet to be discovered cache of straights, like there was of of things like hallmarked silver goods inherited by people who weren't aware of its significance, and snapped up by antique dealers. Corrosion will be a major disadvantage in coastal areas. On the other hand, metal keeps perfectly in the drier inland areas.
I'm still hunting around; if I find any, I'll keep one for your friend!

I haven't been to India but in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia all barbers shave with Shavettes.. I guess most people not interested in straight razors could think it's the same thing..
Edit:
Typical Cambodian Barber "shop"(Or 'Hair Dresser' as the sign says)

I offered a shave ready razor to my friend for a little over $30, and he said he was going to wait until his India trip. My razor sounded expensive, I suspect, and he thinks or thought he could scoop up some good straight razors in India that were much cheaper.
Oh, well! It's his face.

Thanked: 3Would I pay $100 plus (not to mention the hassles of having the thing brought all the way here) if I could get one here even moderately cheaper?
LarryAndro, if your razor's still for sale, I'd like to take you up on it.

Thanked: 3Hothotpot, I can see you'll have problems with Customs. The thing to do if you can manage it is to ask a friend or relative coming from abroad to carry a razor for you. It's lightweight and not bulky, so they shouldn't object. I shouldn't think Customs would object to a razor being brought in by a passenger.
You say in your last post but one that you came across old razors made in England, Germany, etc. Can't you find one of these in good condition, so that you can use it after minor repairs and putting an edge on it? I would be interested in such razors, if you can give me details.
