So, Dubl Duck razors...
- Sharpen easily and well, giving a good edge.
- Are well designed ergonomically.
- Were marketed well.
I am inferring the "marketed well" from the fact that so many barbers had the razors, and a few other things I've read here and elsewhere. This might be confusing cause and effect though. Possibly, it is distributed widely among barbers simply because it is superior. However, I suspect there were several other old-timey razors at the time that were similar in quality that didn't achieve dominant position because their marketing wasn't as good.
There! You like that last paragraph of almost pure ethereal conjecture?!
Do you believe the Dubl Duck is truly superior, without equal? Or, one of the best, but dominant for marketing or other additional reasons?

Without question, Larry. I agree with this. Schumate, I believe was popular with barbers as were many other types of razors that are great shavers. There are some that were even stamped on the tangs as clearly marketed to the barber trade (I'm not thinking W&B choppers here) that I'll keep my trap shut on so I don't contribute to inflated prices for high quality but lesser known razors.

Thanked: 4942Actually many an old Barber has told me that DD's and C-Mon's were their favorites. As I understand it, these two brands were probably the most popular among the Barbers nationwide. Both obviously are superior shavers, look nice and are pretty easy to maintain although I have seen some ground down to shmithereens........
If you want to have some fun regarding the popularity of Double Ducks, go to the old Yahoo Straight Razor Place and start reading all the comments there about them.
Have fun,

As Glen said, They're great shaver's, period. I love the way they shave, especially the Wonderedge. I was fortunate to get a few that were new, no hone wear, little or no use at all. They shave like a dream. Aesthetically speaking, They look nice too, Cracked ice scales, I'm a sucker for those, Nice Bolsters, etc...I have a sizeable flock myself...I'm probably contributing to raising prices...
On the same note, Why are Filarmonica's so popular all of a sudden? (Max?)
Until I saw your post, I haven't even heard anyone speak of Dubl Ducks in some time.
If you look at EBay, A nice Goldedge will still fetch 300 bucks, on the same note, A Filarmonica 14 went for 350.00
Also, The DD's shave so well, hold and take an edge because they used quality steel. There are a few others too.Last edited by zib; 10-07-2009 at 09:19 PM.

Duble Duck was marketed to the trade and sent salesmen out to the barbershops to sell their wares. Not just razors but all kinds of stuff, combs, sissors clippers, etc. They were a commercial barbers supply company. For that reason many barbers bought them and used them and liked them and customers got the good feedback from the barbers and so the popularity spread.
They are great razors though. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
