Thread: Straight razors now mainstream!

Hi guys -

if you ever needed an excuse to go out and buy a 'gentlemen's' magazine, take yourself off to the shop and grab the Jan/Feb issue of 'Playboy'. Why? Well, in addition to the more obvious attractions, there on page 84 is an article entitled 'A Cut Above' that contains a feature on p. 85 called 'Slice Of Life' (ouch) that's about -straight razors. As if that isn't enough, yours truly was the main contributor and some of my own razors are pictured along with some from Aidan Gill Barbershop in New Orleans.

I will ask the Playboy editor if it's OK to scan the article in for you to look at in the near future but there it is anyway!

I'm not sure but I will try to get a PDF version of it for download.

I've heard about this and have been wanting to get a copy! Can't find the damn magazine though. Anyone got a spare copy? Or, yeah, if you can get it scanned in, awesome.

One of my photography mentors photographed for them once. That was cool.

So, how did you get chosen for your contribution? How did they know to talk to you about straights? Very intersting. Am interested in the behind the scenes story!

Did you mention SRP? That's be cool to say SRP, featured in Playboy.

And the razors you had in the mag, well their value just shot through the roof.

I'll have to go get a copy and have a read. If SWMBO asks why I have Playboy, I can tell her its because of the interesting article about razors! Hehe!

SRP wasn't mentioned because I figured if I do it for one I have to do it for all - a lot of what I said was edited out for space anyway. How did I get in there? Well the features editor sent me an email saying (more or less) 'Hi Playboy here. Can you advise on vintage straight razors for an upcoming ish? Have seen your website and you're our boy'. So I sent some razors to Chicago and they took the spread in the mag. Of those featured, the TI Guillochage has since been sold to a customer - and no he didn't know it was going to be in there! A couple of the razors were supplied by the barber shop but my own Frederick Fenney was there as was a nice Case's 'Ace' - and that will be on sale soon!

Let me add my congratulatons as well...

As for shaving a bunny...If memory serves me correctly, after perusing decades of centerfolds, playboy bunnies come pre-shaved--not shave ready.
