A Lifetime Opportunity
My Friends,
I had a once in a lifetime opportunity this weekend. Lynn Abrams graciously opened his home and his skills to me. I drove 3 hours and arrived at 10:00am. I originally thought Lynn would show me how to hone and that would be it. But that was not to be.
Over the course of 9 hours, Lynn showed me how to properly restore a razor, how to properly hone many razors, how to strop properly and finally how to mix lather properly. My brain could not have held one more piece of information. I got to restore an old Wade and Butcher I brought with me while Lynn restored one he had.
Lynn took his time and had me perform every task after showing me how to properly do it, and then corrected me while I performed the same task until I performed it correctly. And, we never moved on until Lynn was satisfied that I could perform the task.
I believe I now have a solid foundation for taking care of my razors. I sat and honed 5 more razors today to shave ready following each of Lynn's steps. I have not shaved with them yet, so I don't know if I did Lynn proud or not. More to follow.
Now, I would like to talk a little about the generosity of my teacher. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the term "Giver's Gain", but Lynn epitomizes it. Lynn opened up to me all he knew, his home and his workshop. He held nothing back, no questions went unanswered. At the conclusion of our time together, nine hours later, all Lynn asked of me was to pass on whatever skills I gain to someone else in need of instruction. You can bet I will.
My friends, that is what it means to be blessed by God and to understand that you get more when you give more.
I will never forget that Saturday we spent together. If any of you get a chance to do the same, take it.
Thank you Lynn.

Lynn is indeed, the man. Sounds like a fantastic day, and reminds me of how thoroughly I enjoyed my trip to Lynn's place.

David,
Wow. You seem like a really great guy, but I don't think I could handle nine hours of anybody.
You have received an amazing gift.
What did you think of that bathroom?

What a great opportunity, isn't it nice to have people around that really do things for the fun and love of a hobby, and not to boost their ego's? Thanks to Lynn (and all of the other great people that contribute so much) for creating this group, and for leading by example to make this place such a helpful source for everyone.
I don't know how else to express the point I'm trying to make, so...... thanks.
Dave

Sounds like a great day. There is nothing more that having a teacher that loves to teach and a student that is willing to learn in a area that both have a mutual interest in. Time well spent.
